Today's Everyday Fashion: The Hunt for a Mustard Cardigan

Let's cut to the chase. I could say a bunch of stuff about my outfit, but all you guys really want to know is where you can buy a mustard cardigan. :-) Here are some options:

1. Forever 21, $18 (this will sell out quick, so act fast!)
2. Urban Outfitters, $38 (use code THEMUSICISSUE for 10% off)
3. JcPenney, $36
4. LA Posh Style, $29

Styling tips: Okay, now let's talk about today's outfit! If you have a bunch of black and white pieces in your closet and no color, today's look is an example of how you can pair those neutrals with new colors. A mustard cardigan is a great addition - so is a red shoe. Together they are a bit mustard and ketchup, but I happen to like the combo. :-) What colors do you use to spice up your basic black pieces?

Occasion: Work
Cardigan: H&M, $18
Shirt: Banana Republic, $35
Belt: Forever 21, $5
Skirt: Limited, $35
Shoes: Delicious/Shoe Carnival, $10
Earrings: Urban Outfitters, $5
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

  2. Thanks for this! I have a mustard cardigan from J. Crew that I love, but I never know how to wear it! I might have to bring it out for my date night tonight. :)

  4. Thanks J! Just ordered mine from Urban Outfitters...picked up a few more colors too :)

  5. I bought the mustard cardi you listed from Forever 21 in-store about a week or so ago and really like the color & the brass-like buttons. The online stock photo makes it look like a washed-out yellow but it is mustard yellow in real life.

  6. Hi J, another great idea,! I have a monochrome closet (black & grey) and this spring I am seriously considering some colors... don't know if the mustard will work on me though.
One question....I see that you find great pieces at even greater prices at shops I never never go to by fear of cheap quality. So I always end up at stores where I pay 3 times the price you pay, because I think if I pay the price I have a better quality (that would last more than 1 wash). What are the stores you would go for good price-quality and the ones you would avoid.
    Thanks!

  7. Love this look. Honestly, the old me would have been too "scared' to add color to a b/w print but the new, inspired by J - me knows it's ok now! And thanks for showing the earrings - I prob would've been guilty of trying to add colored earrings to make the whole look "intentional", but your look shows you don't have to go overboard w/ color.

  8. I usually use blues to spice it up. I love the mustard color, but I don't know if it would work for me.

  9. I fell in love with your mustard cardi the first time I saw it and was immediately on the hunt for one. I finally found one about a month or two ago at Target for only $19.99! I love it and surprisingly it's extremely versatile. Every time I wear it I get tons of compliments!!!

  10. Me too...I bought it last week and the color is much better irl!!

  12. I agree ladies! I saw it in the store and it was really cute!

  13. Cute combo! I love the way you incorporate red. Any idea where to find a cute red belt like yours? I see Forever 21 only has a leopard print skinny red belt right now. Also, I tried on a few bracelets at Forever 21 and didn't buy any because I didn't have a friend around to tell me if they looked cheap. Any recommendation on which bangles to buy from there? Thank you!!

  14. Sarah, have you looked at Limited or Express? They might have a similar red belt. Some of the bracelets do look cheap at Forever 21, but they have many that I love. It's REALLY hard to tell how they look when you view them online, so it's really an in-store decision. I say use your best judgment, and if you like them that's all that really matters! :-)

  15. I've heard from several fans that there is cute one at Target! I couldn't find the link, so didn't include it.

  16. Cath, excellent question. My strategy is a bit different though - I shop all of the stores, but only buy certain things from each of them. For example, at Forever 21 I buy inexpensive basic tees and tanks, sundresses and jewelry. There is really no reason to spend more than $15 for a sundress I'm only going to wear a few times. But I tend to stay away from their blazers, shoes, sweaters and jeans. Instead, I pay a little more for those items at stores like Banana Republic, or try to find brand-name items at a discount store like DSW or TJ Maxx. Hope this helps! :-)

  22. Hey J! Loving the mustard cardi, I'm going to head over to F21 today to look. I just got a beige one last week that I absolutely love. My question is how do you dress down, or make winter cardigans more versatile. I have a red one I bought over the holidays that is great, but its a duller red and looks kind of wintery. Any ideas?

  26. Cath, I find that Ann Taylor Loft has excellent value and quality for both casual and work clothing. They often have great sales. I am very much in the same mind frame as JS, Shop and check out all stores but purchase what looks most appropriate for you situation and price point.
(And having a 13 year old daughter takes me to LOTS of stores i never used to check out till recently... HA !!!). Most important have fun when you shop and figure your outfit puzzles together.

  27. Hi JS, I like this look very much. Classic yet very stylish. Works great for any age and will flatter just about any figure. The color combo makes it edgy and unique. Well Done !! BTW - how do you keep that tan???? (-:

  29. Thanks for your tips Liliane. I am new to the US so I am still trying to find the stores to go and the ones to avoid. I like Loft but don't always find anything my size or that I like in the sales ...
I'll definitely try to be more adventurous with my closet !

  35. Cute outfit! I recently purchased a black and white printed skirt and have been looking for things to wear with it. I'm not really a mustard-girl, though, so I have my fingers crossed that you style this skirt with other things in the future :-)

P.S. The Limited has a cardigan on sale that made me think of you: http://www.thelimited.com/detail/spring-scoop-cardigan/5508593/423 (in Cinnamon)

  37. I snagged a mustard cardi on clearance at Target before the holidays, and now I'm so grateful to have it in my arsenal. It's great when pairing pieces for unexpected color combinations. This outfit is chic, loving the mustard/ketchup palette and the styling tip is spot on! Theres no reason to keep an outfit strictly black/white with such fun layering pieces at your disposal.
