Review of ASOS.com

I have spent the past year drooling over the items on ASOS.com, a United Kingdom retailer. They stock some of the most unique special occasion dresses I have ever seen and when items go on sale the prices are amazing! The company announced that they "moved" to the US in September and with that came free shipping in both directions. I decided to stop drooling and finally placed my first order a couple weeks ago. Here's what I learned:

1. Shipping: Shipping is free in both directions, but it is slow. Like really slow. I'm used to ordering from Forever 21, and they move at a snail's pace but ASOS was way worse. Expect a long wait time if you order (up to two weeks).
2. Quality: I ordered two sale skirts for $20 and $25 (one is pictured above). For the price, the pieces were great quality! Way better than I was expecting, way better than Forever 21. I felt like the prices were great for the quality of the items.
3. Sizing: The sizing is WAY off. This part almost brought me to tears. I ordered a size up *just to be safe* and the skirts are still way too small. This is great news if you are a petite person who wears a 000, but if you are normally in the larger numbers at the Gap, then you might have to skip this website. (For reference, I wear a size 2 in bottoms at Gap/Banana/LOFT/Abercrombie. I ordered a US size 4 in the skirt above, and a US size 6 in another skirt because it was Petite. BOTH are way tiny on me and I can't even zip them up.)
4. Foreign Transaction Fee: This is another part of the experience i really could have lived without. My credit card charged me a foreign transaction fee for ordering from them. This part confused me since they are supposed to be located in the US now? Luckily, when I return the skirts this should get refunded but it was still a bummer to see this on my credit card statement! (Note: my charge was $3 for a $45 order, but this varies by credit card provider and is a charge from them, not ASOS.)

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed. I probably won't order again unless I'm really desperate for one of their special occasion dresses, which I will order at least two sizes larger than normal. :-)

  1. What a bummer!!! I've been eyeing Asos for months but haven't gotten the chance to buy anything from them yet. I'm sorry you had a less than great experience with them.

If I ever do decide to buy from there, how much was the foreign transaction fee? Also do you think a US 6 and US 8P would fit you if you were to buy from them again. Or do you think you'd have to go up three sizes (US 8 and US 10P)?

  2. Hi, I am a long time reader of yours. I wanted to comment on this post. I shop from ASOS like all the time! Since I am European I don't have all this shipping and foreign transaction fee problem, but as far as the sizing, I am absolutely satisfied. I never ordered something and it was not my size. I guess European-US size comparisons are wrong. This applies to shoes too. Sizing is exactly what it says for the European size scale. And no I am not paid by ASOS! Keep up the great posts.

  4. My order was $45 and I believe the fee was $3. If I order again I would get a US 8 and US 10P! (whoa)

    1. I just wanted to say that I find it just a little bit mean to add a whoa when referring to a US size 8. I'm an 8 and proud of it. I believe the average American woman is either a 12 or 14 so comparatively, an 8 isn't all that big.

I love you and I love your blog, but if your target audience truly is the average woman, I'd suggest being a bit kinder regarding larger readers.

  5. Thanks for this review. I've been wondering about ASOS for a while since they do have cute dresses for ridiculously fantastic prices. I'm not surprised about the sizing- European sizing is extremely different than US. I usually wear 2 or 3 sizes larger in European. But the foreign transaction fee is a bit off-putting

  6. I bought my Urban Decay Naked palette from ASOS, because I had been lusting after it for months and couldn't find it anywhere. It shipped out from them fairly quickly, but you are right, it took almost two weeks for it to get here. I was thinking about ordering clothes from them, since they have cute things, their prices are right, shipping is free, and I had a fairly good experience ordering the UD from them... I might have to pass now that I've read your review! I wear a US 6 or 8, so I have no idea what size I would wear there (if I could wear anything!) Bummer!

  7. I ordered from ASOS once before also! I bought this amazing shirt (which I love http://bit.ly/fRNb7A ) but it is a big too big. I got it in a size 4, which I thought would fit since I normally wear a 4 in H&M tops AND the model wearing it in the runway looked to be so tiny! It still looks ok because the shirt is supposed to be a little loose looking.

The weird part is, I was freaking out after I ordered it, thinking that they were going to charge me the Customs Fee but I was never charged anything. I thought that it was only on purchases over $200?

I think you will have a lot better luck ordered tops from their site:)

  8. Thanks Eleni! The problem with this sizing is that normal sizes in the US are 0-14, but that means ASOS only offers sizes 000-10, which leaves a lot of women out. I also try not to be too concerned with what size it says on the tag but it's a little strange to have a closet full of size 2 and then need to order an 8?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Foreign Transaction fees vary by credit card provider, so you might just have a better credit card than I do! :-) I agree about the shirts though - XS shirts are usually too big on me, so ASOS could be the perfect place to find some that actually fit me!

  10. Glad you wrote this post! I've been eyeing ASOS for awhile as well and was interested to see your thoughts. I'll keep in mind the slow shipping and especially the sizing, that IS disappointing...this alone would make me incredibly cautious to buy something. I wouldn't want to wait 2 weeks only to see that the stuff that I bought was too small to zip! Thanks J!

  11. J- love your site!

I think a lot of the problems you had with your ASOS shopping experience are related to a misunderstanding of what their US launch actually meant. The company didn't move to the US; rather, they now have a US-specific website (as well as a UK one and ones for several European companies).
The main difference I've noticed on the US website is the customer-service section is tailored towards US customers and prices default to US$.

The extensive shipping time is because their warehouse is still in the UK. Your order has to go through US customs, which takes time. I live in Arizona, and it takes about 10 days to get an order.

The foreign transaction fee is from your credit card company, not the retailer. It's a fee for a currency conversion, the same sort of fee you'd see if you used your credit card while traveling abroad.

On the topic of foreign currencies, you can save a couple bucks by pricing your order in the different currencies on the site & finding which one has the best US exchange rate on that day. Last time I ordered, by placing the order in Kroner rather than US$, I was able to save another $7-8, which covered the foreign transaction fee and the US shipping charge they used to have.

I can't speak to the sizing, but I've never had a problem with anything I've ordered.

  12. Thanks so much for this post. I've wanting to order from this site for a while now but was not sure how well the experience was going to go.So if I do decide to order in the future I will keep your findings in mind.
    Thanks Again

  13. Just had to add my two cents. I order from ASOS a lot! I love their styles and their prices and I feel that no one else I know has the same ol' stuff. I've never had issues with the shipping times, I have gotten most my orders very quickly, and I have very little patience! One time my order was super, super delayed. So much so I thought the package was lost. Emailed ASOS and they sent out a new package "express" and I got it superfast. They also gave me a discount on my next order. As for sizing....if you get something more fitted or structured, I find that I have to size up (just like I have to do at H&M). If it's a bit looser or slouchy I order to my standard size. One thing that I love that I really like that helps me with sizing is often they will have a video showing the model wearing the outfit and they will tell you what size the model is wearing...I am so not a model but it gives me an idea at least if the thing will fit me! Finally, if its something I am really unsure of, I just buy two in different sizes....refund shipping is free! Oh, and if I really want the items fast, I just pay for express shipping ($12) it comes on time , fast and trackable.

  14. Yes, I feel like the "US launch" was made out to be something that it wasn't. I assumed they had opened a warehouse here in the US, not just branded a website. I clarified the piece about the foreign transaction fee above - I understand that this varies by credit card provider, but it still stinks to get hit up with this fee when I thought I was ordering from a US company! Sizing appears to be about the same as H&M, which is also way off.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love Asos.com and had the same sizing experience with my first order from there. I do find that their sizing is much like H&M and I have to size up. You can find some very unique stuff there though. I have ordered 3 shirts from their site thus far and each one is a US 4 and fits perfectly (I am usually a 0 or 2). I just ordered a few belts and a pair of pants and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. I ordered the pants in a US 6 so I hope they are big enough for me! Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Uh Oh! I hope you don't get charged another foreign transaction fee for returning the items since technically the card could count this as a second transaction. Or the first one may stick even after the return. I used to work for a bank and quit after three months because I couldn't stand being a part of their unfair business.

I had noo idea that European sizes ran so much smaller or is that something unique to this site? I've never ordered from foreign clothing websites and now I'm afraid to. Yikes! Sorry it didn't work out. The skirt looks hot!

  17. I actually just checked the Size Chart for Asos. I think the key is to look at the actual measurements of the sizes to determine your UK size and then use the conversion chart to figure out the US size. I googled the Gap Size Chart to compare the two company's size charts. A size 2 in Gap means that you have a 25 inch waist and a 37.25 inch hip, for example.

But Asos's sizes are muchhhh different especially in terms of measurements. UK 8 according to Asos (US 4 according to the conversion chart) requires a 24.75 inch waist and a 34.75 inch hip, which wouldn't fit someone who orders a Size 2 jean in Gap.

It's ridiculous. Are there people who are actually small enough to be a UK 4?!?. But I think everyone shouldn't have a problem with ordering from Asos so long as they go by measurements and inches and not just rely on the conversion chart because clearly their US sizes are skewed

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think you'll find in most other parts of the world, sizing is larger numbers anyway. The smallest size down under is a size 6, and largest in fashion type stores is size 14 MAYBE 16 if you're lucky.
They tend to go more by sewing pattern sizes methinks.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Totally agree with the sizing issue. I had to return everything on my first order from them (which included several items). I am also a size 2, but ordered a 4 like you just to be safe and NOTHING worked. Not even the shoes. Not only is the sizing problematic, but I also feel like the fit is off too. Like some of their stuff is only meant to be work by 5' 9" models that weigh 120 pounds. I've been hesitant to order from them again but their stuff is just so darn cute!

  20. Great detective work! Thank you for sharing what you found. I ordered from another UK website called Monsoon and followed their "measurements" and the dress was about 4 sizes too big for me. So I ignored the size chart on ASOS and just went with a size bigger. Sounds like their measurements are a little better though, I would have gone with the US 6, and that sounds like what I need for bottoms!

  21. Thanks for posting this review relating to ASOS. I don't know how many times I have browsed their website and love what I see - so many unique items. Now I know what to keep in mind if I do end up ordering from them.
    Thanks!

  22. Erin, I have one other experience ordering from the UK, a website called Monsoon. I ordered a couple sizes larger (I believe I went with the US 6) and the dress was HUGE on me, so the sizing seems inconsistent by company. I was also charged a foreign transaction fee, but it was refunded when I sent back the dress. The good news with ASOS - shipping is free in both directions, so you do get a full refund!

  23. this actually makes me really excited. I wear 000 LOL! maybe even a 0000 that's how petite I am. Kind of sucks though that your first experience with them wasn't what you hoped. PS. I love the flashback friday idea and the black blazer was perfect 1st post!
I saw that you wore the black blazer with the navy dress! What are your thoughts on navy and black together? As a design student, I've always though/learned that there isn't enough contrast between the two, so I apply that same rule to the way I dress, but you seemed to pull it off in two of those looks!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would urge you to give asos another shot. I bought a dress from them and love it. Their items are unique and good quality , and the sale prices make the fee worth it almost! The sizes are small, you're right about that. I order a 6, and we're about the same size. Sorry your skirts didnt fit:(

  25. I just ordered from ASOS and I have to agree with some of your comments. The shipping took about 3 weeks and the dress I ordered was only available in one size, size 6. I usually wear a 4 so I thought a size up should be okay since it is European. Well the dress was way too big on top but fit well on the bottom. The fabric was similar to that of something I would find at F21. I'm not sure I'd order again, its a fun site to look and get ideas but I think the clothes have to be tried on for size and quality.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow! Asos.com was one of the sights that I wanted to check out recently. However, since I'm in one of the larger numbers I probably wouldn't even fit their clothes as I'm like a size 8-10 at J.Crew. Well, thanks for the advice.

  27. Thanks so much for sharing this review. I've seen ASOS items featured so many times in blogs and magazines, but always been wary of ordering from them. It's good to know that the quality is pretty good, but it sounds like it's quite a hassle to deal with them. Thanks for sharing!

  28. I also had a bad experience.  When I complained that their site had nothing to indicate that I would be paying through a non-US bank, I got a series of canned customers "service" responses that attempted to instruct me in what a foreign transaction fee was.  I know what it is, but there should be something in the check-out process to flag you that you will paying through a bank outside the US.

  29. For everyone freaking out- it is just like ordering anything online from a store that you wouldn't be able to shop in, obviously you are taking chances especially when it comes to pants, dresses and skirts. I live in Canada so I am pretty patient when it comes to waiting for packages to arrive. I find Forever 21 ridiculously fast, comes in about 2 days! My ASOS order came in less than a week and was free, which is amazing, we get charged by pretty much every US retailer. I received everything I ordered and I happen to be the double digit size customer you suggest not order from ASOS. I am a size 10-14. I ordered size 12 pants, a size 12 dress and a size 12 top. The pants fit great and if anything are a bit loose but great quality. The dress is good quality but I am returning it as the colour doesn't suit and it is too BIG! Love the top as well but the next order I place I will be ordering a size down with tops and dresses as the clothes were a bit baggy on me. European measurements aren't 'off' to Europeans-- they think US sizes are ridiculously large. A UK 14 is a US 10. There is a 4 size difference, but it does vary somewhat brand to brand. The styles ASOS has are cool, free shipping is awesome and the quality is excellent. I have abandoned Forever 21.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I am an 8-10 as well. You will be fine as longer as you remember UK sizing runs 2 sizes smaller than what were used to. You would be a 14. If it's too large just take it to a tailor to have a little nip and tuck.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm not sure where everyone is used to shopping but, you can not possibly think that if you pay $25 for a skirt or $40 for a dress that it will be Saks quality. The clothes are cheap but, cute. I am a high end shopper but, when it comes to buying trendy clothes I go to cheap stores like h&m or F21. You have to pair the cheap with the expensive for a quality look plus if it doesn't fit right take it to a tailor.

  34. I it was my second order on Asos.com, i ordered some shoes by Steave Maiden. And when they did arrive, i saw that one shoe size is much larger than the other shoe( one 4.5 and second-7.5), so I sent them back. It took them about 3 weeks to process the return,it was 21 June...Today is 31 July and they still have not returned my money back 130 EURO!!!!!!!!!(Not to mention the bottom of the heel was lose on one of the shoes) . I emailed the customer service team about my bad experience, but they are not answering the question, but just repeat what it says in the FAQ's, even though it doesn't answer your query. i'll never use them again, and tell you beware!!! Don't make the same mistake!!!!!

  35. I have recently been very dissapointed in asos. I ordered a dress that i needed in the next few weeks. I waited for a week, and it still hadn't arrived. I finally went online to track my order. I found out that my order had been unsuccessful. I didnt receive any email or notification stating this. Asos no longer has my size in the dress I needed. I won't be shopping there anymore.

  36. Thanks for sharing your experience! I know some people really love ASOS but I wasn't impressed with my first order so not sure I would try it again!

  37. So glad I came across this post.  I was curious about ASOS and was considering ordering a handbag or two... or three ;)   I had about 5 different bags in my "save for later" and only one of them indicated any kind of measurements.  I found that to be odd.  At least they had a picture of a model/mannequin holding it so I could get somewhat of an idea of whether it was enormous, large, big, medium or small.  The foreign transaction fee I read about on your site has pretty much made up my mind to avoid ASOS.  Thanks for sharing - love your site!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thank you, so glad you like the blog! :-) I don't know what it is about foreign transaction fees that are such a deterrent but I totally agree. If I find something I really love I may try again but the fees are hard to get past for some reason!

  39. asos.com scam: cheat on size and sell worn items!

Just now I bought a dress from asos.com on sale.  The first time, it sent me an incorrect item without the "unused condition" tag, which looks like the dress has been worn before.  So I complained and got a replacement.  I asked for a size M, specified a couple of time in the email communications and everything. The replacement comes in and I tried, found it too large to be size M.

So I have a closer look at the dress' label, found that somebody use a pen and wrote a "M" on to cover the original size "L" statement!! And the dress also comes without the "unused condition" tag!!!!  and on the transparent plastic package, somebody also put a "M" sticker to cover the original "L" sticker!!!

As a long time customer who bought from there more than several times, I'm now very angry with asos.com!  asos.com was a reputable website recommended by many online bloggers, and I cannot believe they are selling used items and cheat on size!!  I have took pictures of evidence, feel free to contact for further information.

And they charged my account when they send me the replacement order without noticing me at first! be careful with your credit card details with this company because from what I experience with them this time, I doubt they are trustworthy!  Customer service has received my report, but failed to respond within 6 hours as they promised.

  40. I ordered from ASOS this past Spring. I most certainly agree with you, it was a major disappointment. My sister and I bought a considerable amount from them and returned half of it due to incorrect sizing and COLORS. If they would have been a true USA company it wouldn't have been a problem. But, when we returned the items it had to be sent Fed Ex because it is cheaper than the US Postal Service when shipping internationally. Buyers please BE AWARE that their company and return center is overseas. It cost around $300 to return the items. Ouch! Note to self, do not buy from ASOS until they actually have a warehousing facility for returns in the good ole' US of A. They may advertise free shipping and free returns, but read the hidden fine print. It is actually free shipping if you don't return anything. And if you do return an item then they reverse it and say that the return was free but you have to pay the original shipping charge. So, bottom line is if you feel like paying for international shipping then don't hesitate to buy from them. If you do not want to pay for international shipping, then do not buy from ASOS.

  41. I bought a skirt from here and wouldn't ever shop here again. Shipping is SLOW. Information regarding where my shipment is located and when I will receive it is meager to non-existent. And there is NO customer service.  No number and when i sent an email (their form says they are to get back to you in 6 hours) they then send a reply that they won't be getting back to me for over 24. Bogus website.

  42. Customer service doesn't exist, never responded to our multiple emails.  They received the goods back on 19 August 2011 and as of now (07 September 2011) we haven't heard from them.  We took a chance based on assumption that only dissipated write reviews, as we have seen quite a few bad ones. Now we know, that those who received they order and have written good reviews should fill lucky. This company is internet fraud as they went public in UK (I thought it makes them more reputable) and took money from investors and now they take customers money, just to disappear in few months

  43. I swear by this site. It's amazing I've order 4 Items, 3 I kept. Typically I'm a XS in Express in their dresses, or a 2-4 overall. I would compare that to a ASOS size 6. Yes that tripped me out for a bit. I recommend watching the videos first before purchasing. I love their shipping and return policy. I usually receive everything I order within a week-10 days.

  44. I have ordered from ASOS twice and used their size chart both times.  The items I received (a body con midi skirt in ponte knit and sheer bow tie blouse) both fit beautifully.  Their size charts appear to be more accurate than most.

  48. I order from asos a few weeks back and needed to exchange some products (sizing and color issues). After no email response I suddenly thought Twitter might help and did it ever!! I am bothered that this is not on their site but if you want instant, like within minutes (no joke), response send a tweet to @ASOS_heretohelp Since finding this I have communicated with them about my order, my exchange, products now out of stock. It is the best customer service experience I've had in a long time. Btw shipping is always super fast.

  49. I've had a fairly good experience with asos. Some items have been amazing, others, meh. I wouldn't buy anything there that wasn't originally at least around the 80$ mark (they have great sales), as I'm sure the quality dips at that point. I'd stay away from asos brand rings too, as they tend to turn your fingers green.

As for sizing, I'm probably a 6 US these days (except at retailers with massive vanity sizing, where I'm a 2 or a 0)  so I comfortably buy a 12 in ASOS. Which is just the way European sizing is, I mean, ordering up a single size isn't going to do it. Do your homework people.

  50. a little piece of advice; use the size guide in the site..its very accurate!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I found the size chart to be WAY off, even when I measured myself with a tape measure. I would order at least two sizes up from the recommended "US size"!

  52. I ordered a cute lipsy jumpsuit from asos and was fully satisfied. In my opinion shipping up to 10 days for free is fast enough. The quality is good enough(always depending on the price) and sizing will not dissapoint you if you use the size guide on the site. I dont know how the sizes are in UK so i used the size guide and didnt compare UK sizes to my country's sizes (Greece btw). Do not buy from the Petite or Curve if its not your body type because yes you are going to be disapointed. Also check out your emails because if the size you ordered gets out of stock you will not get the confirmation email. Overall i was satisfied and i am certainly going to buy again..ps1: i used paypal and know nothing about the foreign transaction fee.
ps2: i know i've just bought a single item but i think size guide IS useful because i was about to order a size8 and after looking into the size guide i changed my mind to a size10..hopefully!)

  53. I haven't had good luck with ASOS shipping.  I ordered a dress with express shipping and it was lost by the shipping company.  Knowing that I needed the dress for an occasion the following weekend I re-ordered again with express shipping.  This dress was also lost.  2 for 2 I'm not impressed.  I'm even less impressed that getting my money back for the 2 dresses has been such a hassle.
I would strongly advise against using the company, although their clothing is some times so darn cute.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Delivery is slow if it actually arrives. Ordered from it a couple of times and ''the parcel was lost by the carrier'' . They couldn't send a replace because the items were out of stock.  Second time it happened exactly the same. And of curse the refund didn't include the foreign fee transaction.
This website is just a waste of time for purchasing.

  55. Are they sized in Brit sizes? Makes sense that things would be so small. A Brit 4 is about a US 0, as I recall from living there.

    ReplyDelete
  56. No, it's the U.S. sizes. When a European company says U.S. size 6, they actually mean U.S. size 2. It's still 2 sizes off.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Their sizes are all over the place, insane! I am a size 6 in mostly everything I buy in the US (it varies sometimes, I have things in my closet from size XS-L). A size 6 on ASOS, according to their website, is 26.75 inches. WHAT? Who is making these clothes!? I have to move up to sizes 10-12. Crazy. And a size 6 is also only a 32in bust! I knew just looking I'd never be able to fit into those clothes..

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was disappointed with the clothing I got from ASOS.  It was so cute on their website, but so not cute when I put it on.  I ordered a lace dress that I drooled over for weeks on their website and when I got it... well it was a little gothic looking and not what I expected.

  62. I would strongly advise against using ASOS. I live abroad and have been stung so many times by them. Firstly, they didnt include a item which I paid for. After a long dispute, they send the item out, but without a tracking number and I never received it... They promised to refund the extremely high custom charges as a gesture of goodwill, but I have not seen the money ! The quality of the clothes (all maternit) was just awful and it had a really bad smell to the jeans, which was so off putting. Never ever again.

  63. They have horrible customer service! If you have any issues with your order it is hard to resolve! I would NOT order from them again!!!

  65. I used standard shipping. That was the only order I've ever placed with ASOS so not sure about express shipping!

  66. I wish I would have read this earlier! I have been waiting 14 days for my package and keep getting mixed stories about the status of my order :(

  67. I just ordered a party dress from there. I used the size chart and measured myself, and got a US 6/ Uk 10, its slightly larger in areas that according to the size chart I figured I be, but I'm glad erred on the side of caution since the dress has no stretch. Normally I'm a 0-2/ 26. Definitely follow the size chart and if you are in between 2 sizes. Shipping isn't fast and its a pain to return things.

  68. Hi! For those of you that have ordered from ASOS, what size would you suggest for this dress if I usually get a 5-6 in US jeans and usually a medium in US dresses like this? I'm nervous about ordering from them, but I'm obsessed with this dress J had on her NYE post...and I cant find one in this style anywhere else! (any suggestions let me know!)

  69. I'm very surprised by the bad experiences.  I've ordered from them twice and both transactions ran smoothly.  The quality was great and the price was right.  The size was spot on.  I've only ordered dresses, though, so maybe pants and skirts are a different story.  Bottom line, I have to say give it another shot.  I would never buy something that I need last minute online, so the time to ship didn't bother me.  I don't recall it taking anywhere near 2 weeks, but I'm not sure exactly how long it took.  I did buy 2 dresses for New Years like a week into December and I feel like it only took a week.  I know I had plenty of time in case they didn't work out (one of them did).  As for returns, I mailed back one of the dresses (I didn't care for the style on me).  Shipping was paid for by ASOS.  All I had to do was put the dress back into the package it came in, fill out a short form, attach the prepaid shipping sticker and that was that!

  70. I love Asos! Everything I've ordered fits great. I usually pay the extra shipping to get sooner and it always arrives in two days! I'm sorry so many of you have had bad shipping experiences.

  71. I'm really surprised by the negativity ASOS is getting. I ordered a really cute white skater dress for my birthday in my normal size (14) and it fit like a glove. As far as the shipping, it was about as long as I expected.
