Today's Everyday Fashion: Weather Permitting

When I brought home this blazer a couple months ago, this was the first outfit that popped into my head. I love the mustardy-brown color mixed with the bright royal blue color of the stripes. Also - I know that posting a white jeans outfit in October is going to raise a lot of "white after Labor Day" questions. My personal opinion is to go by weather, not date. In Florida it's still bright and sunny and has barely cooled off, so there's no reason not to wear white. Up north, I would feel just as comfy wearing this with a pair of knee-high brown boots instead of flats for extra warmth. If there's snow on the ground I would skip it, but on a brisk, sunny day? I say rock those jeans. :-) How would you wear this look considering the weather where you live?

  1. Regardless of weather, I'd wear this outfit. I'm in fall mode currently, but would wear this with boots.

  2. Loving the camel blazer paired with the blue.  I would only swap out the shoes for boots since I live in Ohio.  I think yellow would look nice added to this look also.  Heather

  4. This is something I wondered about when I moved to San Diego!  On day I asked one of the Nordstrom employees about the fashion "rule" here.  She said it's a little more flexible, but she personally still doesn't wear white bottoms after Labor Day. I'm still sporting my white blazer, though!

  5. I'm in Houston (weather is probably pretty similar to yours), so everything about this outfit is perfect! This would be a great outfit for my casual Fridays at work too.

  12. I totally go by weather.  I would die in Dallas if I wore "fall/winter" clothes after Labor Day!  Tomorrow should (crossing my fingers!) be the first day I can wear a jacket outside and not just in my office!

  13. I don't mind white clothes all year long...even though I usually can't wear white because that's ALWAYS the day I spill coffee all over me!

  14. I love these colors together and I love these outfits.   No one seems to know for sure where that no-white-after-Labor-day originates, but most speculate it has to do with the heat. Therefore, it only makes sense that if it is still hot you should still be able to wear white. :)

  15. Tiffany, I spill a lot on myself too but Tide pens are the best invention ever!! I highly recommend. :-)

  16. Love! I have always wondered about that "rule." I totally agree with you. Plus, white goes with everything!

  17. Love this outfit (like all your other outfits!)  and yes, white after labour day is totally acceptable.  I've worn my white jeans with boots in the fall many times - and I live in the rainy Pacific northwest!    Go with what you love!

  18. Don't see a problem with white at all! Love this combo!

  19. Snow on the ground in Denver this morning. No white jeans. I'll look forward to seeing your fall/winter choices once it finally cools off in Florida...that happens in January or February, right? ;)

  22. It's still like summer where I live.  I noticed at church last Sunday everyone was dressed for summer.  I think I was the only one in warm weather "fall" shades.  So I think your take is the way to go with white.  Cute, as always!

  23. Love the colors and advice on white.  You are right, going strictly by date would leave a lot of warm weather after Labor Day and some cold days after Easter - or is it Memorial day?  You are right, it's confusing.  So, because the high in Chicago is 55F today, I would try the above with the boots you mentioned and some cream cords for the same effect

  24. well...... Northern MN got snow yesterday, along with ND. I am in MN but didn't get the snow. Wish I was in FL right now. Enjoy the sun, winter has about showed up here now.  :) Steph

  25. What color pants would you wear with this besides the white?

  26. I seriously love stripes right now! I recently bought a white and black striped long sleeve shirt from Forever21 and I love it!

  27. Definitely go by weather not by date, It's still in the 80s in Serbia and I wear white jeans and white cargo pants almost every day b/c I didn't have almost any chance to wear them since spring b/c this summer officially had the highest temperatures ever, nights were also too hot for jeans/pants...I actually wore white jeans and navy-white stripes strapless top last sunday, with wedge-sandals (navy with red) and even though on the river  I didn't need the jacket even after the sunset...

  29. I'd wear that outfit just the way it is or with boots like you mentioned.  I think the white after Labor day idea only applies to frilly white things :-)

  30. I'm so glad this entry exists. I have a lovely, higher-end white blazer that fits like it was made for me, and I wore it a lot in the summer. But sadly, I've not touched it since Labor Day because I can't decide if it's an inappropriate thing to wear (especially since I live in Michigan, where it's currently 55 degrees)! Does the "white rule" apply to bottoms AND tops like jackets? Or primarily bottoms? Or should I just do what I want and wear that blazer like it's my job? :)

  31. I would wear this outfit in a heartbeat! I just wore my white skinny jeans on Tuesday because it was sunny and 70s. I will still rock them with boots too. Love it!

  32. Lynette, I say go for it! I did a celebrity look last winter with black jeans and top, and leopard pumps with a white blazer over it. I really think it's how you wear it!

  33. I think white can certainly be worn during the winter as long as you it's a heavier material (probably no linen).  Plus - fashion is rules are meant to be broken :)

  35. I love it!!!! It looks pulled together, bright, and very comfy.  We are having lovely weather here in Vancouver B.C. (in the 70's)  which is unusual this time of year, so I am going to wear a similar outfit today.  Thanks!

  36. I love the color combo!  I would totally wear this!  I wish I could wear skinny jeans!  A friend of mine told me she thinks anyone can wear them, but...even though I am tall and thin, I am a pear-shaped woman, and I just don't think skinny jeans flatter my bottom-half!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Coby, have you tried a straight fit? They are halfway between a skinny and bootcut, so you get the same slim effect but not quite as slim.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, I totally agree!! White linen is much harder to pull off, but these jeans are super-thick, and I even have a pair of off-white wool dress pants that were made for winter. Fashion rules were definitely made to be broken! ;-)

  39. Haha exactly! It might be chilly by December here in FL. Thankfully I have two cold-weather trips before then so I will have some cold weather outfits for you guys soon!

  40. J, I stumbled across your blog earlier this week after looking for style tips on pinterest. I have been addicted ever since, I keep digging into your blog more and more and keep finding ideas and tips that I just love. Your blog is amazing and has already inspired me to try and be a little bit more creative with my style, especially that at the office. This week I received so many compliments on my outfits (all of which were some way or another inspired by your looks). I was shocked to see that there can be so many cruel comments made on your page, I just wanted to stop by and say, I think you are a beautiful, talented and creative woman and I hope you continue to do what you love and don't let people behind a computer screen get you down. Again, I am addicted to your blog and want to thank you for all of your inspiration thus far!

  41. Jessica, you are too sweet, thank you and welcome to the blog! :-) I think the positive comments far, far outweigh the negative and I am a big believer that you shouldn't let comments on either spectrum (positive or negative) go to your head. Appreciate you stopping by!

  43. Love this look, I could def. see myself wearing every single piece. I don't care about this stupid rule not to wear white after Labor Day, I think you made this look really fall apropriate adding all this camel. It's a great outfit for work. At least for my work place - it's perfect.

  44. Love this outfit and your view on white jeans.

What about other colored jeans, though, for example, green? Do those have staying power through the winter? Or should they be kept for sunnier days?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks Abby! Yes, I think pretty much any color of skinny jean can work in all seasons. I know I'll be wearing my emerald ones often this fall/winter!

  46. I actually just wrote a post recently about wearing white after labor day. I love white. I probably own about 10 pairs of white pants including jeans and slacks. It really just depends on how you accessorize it. I love a pair of white jeans with a bulky sweater and knee high brown riding boots. At the end of the day as long as you feel confident in your outfit no one can question you. I will definitely be recreating this outfit. Thanks again for another great inspriation. ~Taima www.taimata.com

  48. I love the color combination here! I would automatically think cobalt + mustard but it works so well! And I agree with white pants - honestly, I think they can even be worn in the winter - sometimes white is just so crisp in the winter. As long as it's accompanied by something appropriate - boots, a sweater, layers, etc - I think it's kind of ridiculous it's still even considered a "rule"!

  50. I have a double-breasted, 3/4-length, eggshell-WHITE, faux fur jacket with embossed silver buttons, which I've had for years, and always "save" for those extremely rare Special Occasions;  but which I'm planning to just go ahead and wear this Winter here in Pennsylvania............ particularly when there's SNOW on the ground............ (i.e., thanks to you, J., "Don't be afraid to wear the good china!!")

I think I'll wear my eggshell-white jacket with my skinny black jeans and knee-high burgundy leather boots;  and............ after looking at how  *g.o.o.d.*  your WHITE jeans look with BRIGHT royal-blue-and-white here............ I'm going to go on the hunt now for a bright top~~of some color~~that goes with the rest of my (planned) outfit!!

  51. What other color pants would you recommend with the camel and blue and white striped combo on top? I have black skinny denm, cropped khakis, red skinny denim, olive tapered military style pants, and denim. I couldn't wear the denim to work and that's what I am looking for. Willing to buy something new but don't know what would work. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Dark denim would definitely work for the weekend, and for work I think the olive military pants would be great! You could also go monochromatic in some cobalt blue work pants.
