Today's Everyday Fashion: Exotic Locations

The minute I saw this Lucky Magazine spread, I fell in love. The tribal patterns, the bright colors, the relaxed feel. It made me want to hop on a plane to an exotic destination for vacation! Instead I hopped on over to my closet to see if I couldn't create the same feeling using items I already had. I loved the idea of wearing my green cargos with bright colors, and the idea of pairing a patterned necklace with pattered top. I think this outfit is proof that you don't have to sacrifice on style, no matter how casual the occasion!

  4. Love the vivid colors!
Question- Do you buy most of your items in store or online? I don't mind online, but I hate paying shipping!

  5. I really like that top! How long ago did you get it?

  8. Gina, the shoes were in a super-clearance bin so they might be hard to find in the store! I have my fingers crossed for you!

  9. Thanks Mindy. I bought the shirt in March or April!

  10. Thanks Melanie! Almost everything I buy is in the store. I like to look online before I shop so I know what's out there, but I also hate to pay shipping so I prefer the mall. Some stores you can only shop online (Stella & Dot, small boutiques) and they are worth the extra hassle to get something unique that no one else has, but if it's a store like Gap, it's better to just go there in person.

  12. Sounds silly but I never thought of going so bright with my cargos.  Love it.

What size is your shirt you have on?

  14. Stephanie, I wear a size 0 up top so I always get the smallest size available. In this case it was a S. And just a heads up that the shirt fits loose in general!

  17. I feel there are too many statement things going on here.  Statement necklace, shirt, belt...etc.  If you took away the necklace and belt, let the shirt hang loose (since your jeans are tight then the top can be loose and flowy) it would look better.  With all this going on, I just don't know where to look.

  18. I love that you pick different themes for different days - doesn't it make life so much more exciting? It's like, you can add a little bit of any personality, culture, or mindset to your current self with just a twist of apparel.

  19. Couldn't agree more! Who needs an exotic vacation when I can create a feeling using the clothes in my wardrobe! :-) (okay, the vacation would still be nice...)

  20. i agree for the most part... but i would keep the necklace as well (i think it looks fab with that top and cargo! just get rid of the necklace and loose the top! ;) much btter!)

  22. ...And on the other hand I might find your aesthetic plain, simple and boring. But isn't that the beauty of fashion? That everyone can have such different tastes? Not every outfit is going to suit "your taste" and that's a beautiful thing. What would the world be like with just one aesthetic and one point of view to choose from? Why try to change every outfit you see to match your point of view?

  23. YES! I have that same image saved in my inspo file. Very nice take on the look. Beautiful shirt and love the neon belt. It's so good to see how you take fantasy outfits and make them your own. It's one of my favorite things about your blog.

  24. I like the theme very much, but honestly I feel this look is just too much.  The shirt itself is a statement piece, and so many competing colors give me a bit of a seizure.  I'd LOVE this look if it got  rid of the neon accessories and maybe was paired with a white bottom (plus burgundy purse with black?)

  25. Didn't mean to offend nor try and change your outfit at all.  Your comment policy says you're open to other opinions.  I wanted to get your thoughts on my "view" of it.
But apparently my view is plain, simple and boring.  So, thanks for the feedback!

  26. J, I've been a fan of yours because you present fashion to your audience as though you are our very best girlfriend.  However, snapping at someone who was simply giving you her suggestions is way out of line.  Girlfriends are honest with one another; share opinions in effort to make sure our friend is putting her best self forward.  You can chose to ignore the advise and go with your gut…but to call someone plain, simple and boring when she is merely trying to help is childish and inappropriate.   Maybe you should revise your comment policy to state: “If you disagree with what I’m putting out there, prepare to be insulted.”

  27. Actually my comment policy is that if you wouldn't say something to a friend at work - then don't say it here!! Would you actually walk up to me in person and start telling me everything you hate about my outfit? I really doubt it, but it's just the same as walking up to someone on the internet and saying those things. We are so used to watching shows like the Fashion Police where they rip into people's outfits, but that's really NOT okay. We should celebrate our differences! If your aesthetic is plain and simple then I LOVE that. But why are you telling me that my aesthetic is "wrong"? I can't be colorful? I'm all about raising women up and celebrating our differences! Let's start being nice to each other when it comes to fashion.

Here's another way you could have said it - or if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all!  "J, love the outfit but it's busy for my taste. If I were wearing this outfit, I would remove the belt and necklace." See the difference? You've shared what YOU would do, rather than telling me that I look bad or that my point of view is wrong. *gets off soap box*

  28. Please see my response to "Guest" below. I know it's hard to tell on the internet, but you are taking the tone of my comment totally wrong. I wasn't saying that she/he was plain and simple. I was simply presenting a "WHAT IF" situation! I was actually hoping to have a fun and open conversation about this!! Don't know why everyone is upset - I'm the one who came home to a mean and nasty comment about my outfit that I LOVE and poured my heart and soul into. :-)

  30. Thank you! I'm a big believer that creativity flows through you, not from you. I just show up and the magic happens. I give all the credit to the big guy upstairs!! :-)
