Today's Everyday Fashion: Blue Velvet

Inspiration: Citizens

Here are two ways I've worn my blue velvet pants so far! Buying these pants was a tough call. On one hand, the fit is amazing and I've always been a big fan of velvet. On the other hand, they are so dark blue they almost look black, and I'm pretty stumped on coming up with too many different ways to wear them. Are you a fan of velvet? How would you wear velvet pants?

  1. I thought these were black until you said otherwise. Dark blue/navy clothes other than jeans make me so nervous. I don't know what to pair navy with other than gray or white, and I don't have any white bottoms and just one gray skirt. Although navy pants should be more flexible! I don't think I've ever even tried on velvet pants, but I'm not opposed to them!

  2. I love those!! I would wear them exactly how I'd wear jeans, though I think I'd avoid the black blazer, since the color match is so close it almost looks like a mistake.  Try the graphic tee with your leather moto jacket.  Or an oversized, comfy sweater.  Go for colors that bring out the blue, maybe teal?  Gah, I'm hoping these might come in a plus size somewhere because I'm loving them.

  3. I love that cardigan from the Limited! I love how sequins dress up your outfit ever so slightly!

  4. I have a black velvet pair of pants that are from Banana. One of the best investments I made all winter. I love playing with texture and these are the perfect item. I've paired them with casual sweaters and tops and dressed them up with accessories and fancier shoes. I'm working on trying to transition them to springtime outfits, which is more of a challenge, as velvet is typically a festive, winter fabric, but I'm excited for the challenge!

  5. I think both of your outfits are super cute! As one reader suggested I would perhaps try wearing them with brighter colors. Perhaps a nice pink, teal, or yellow

  6. Not a big fan of velvet - but you did a great job with outfitting them! I think a white or off-white top/sweater would look great as well. I wonder if this trend will come in more strongly next winter...

  7. I'd definitely wear velvet pants, they're a great winter alternative for colored skinnies. At first I thought the pants were just black because the color doesn't really come up on camera. I love the logo T with the blazer because it gives a city street look.

  9. I have a pair of black velvet skinnies and love them! And dark blue is just as versatile -- you can really wear them the same way you would wear dark denim. One of my favorite looks is to pair these with a chambray shirt and either a big sparkly necklace or some funky pearls. Add a moto jacket if it's chilly and you're set!

  10. I remember a navy and orange combo you wore once. Could you try a red orange with the navy velvet? I always love silver/gray with navy too.

  11. J - try with a white top and red blazer (or red details) or with a brown top/blazer and brown shoes & handbag.

    1st combo is my favourite.Vx

  12. I just have a question about the color of your (very pretty!) velvet pants!!    In shopping  *o.n.l.i.n.e.*,  GAP's 1969 Always-Skinny Velvet Pants are offered in Bright Royal Blue and Dark Indigo.    One online Customer Reviewer said, however, that............ in her GAP  *s.t.o.r.e.*  (Ohio)............ the pants come in Ink Blue and Black.    Are the Ink Blue and the Dark Indigo colors maybe the same, though............ i.e., because one Reviewer said the (in-store) Ink Blue color was a DEEP PURPLE-y black;  and another Reviewer said the (online) Dark Indigo color also looks like an extremely DEEP PURPLE, too??

Do your very dark blue (almost black) velvet pants maybe look............ (i.e., to you, too, J., as they have to others)............ like they could possibly be a very DEEP PURPLE (almost black) instead??    'Only just askin', because----as you know----there might be *one* array of colors that "better complements" very dark blue (almost black) velvet pants............ and *another* array of colors that "better complements" very deep purple (almost black) velvet pants!!    In any event, both of your outfits today are positively  *g.o.r,g.e.o.u.s.*!!

  13. Rosanna, I think they are dark blue! I know sometimes people call colors different things though (I'm convinced people see them differently sometimes), but mine look dark blue to me. ;-)

  19. J - I have yet to even see velvet pants in store... maybe I need to get out shopping more haha. I imagine they would be very warm, which would be good for the cold weather here in the Pacific Northwest, might have to get myself a pair :)

  21. I love your new velvet pants. You look incredible in them. I know what you mean about the fit of them. Velvet  just moulds perfectly on the body to create an amazing fit.
    You look amazing.

  22. Cute!!  I just saw some red velvet pants at Loft yesterday and they were so cute but I had NO idea how to style them.  Any suggestions?  How long do you think velvet pants can be worn?  Until it's warm or until I'm tired of red velvet? :)

  24. SO glad I scooped up the cardigan and blue velvet pants when they were both on sale. I got the lighter blue velvet so they aren't so dark. LOVE them! Thanks for the heads up!!

  26. I loved the top outfit! Blazers are such a great look, but every time I try one on it just doesn't work for me. Any suggestions on finding the right fit or outfit?

  27. I actually have these exact pants (bought them before they went on sale though. gah. finals week stress shopping). I've had similar issues coming up with outfits. They've all been a variation of your first, my favorite: black blazer, black and white striped tee, leopard belt, blackwatch tartan scarf and black or taupe booties. It sounds like print overload but it works!
