I've been feeling a bit under the weather this week, so my regularly scheduled outfit photos have not happened yet. In place of those, let's dissect this celebrity outfit I *attempted* to re-create last week, shall we? I love Solange's outfit, crazy patterns and all! But this is one that did not translate into real life for me. I like hers a lot better than mine, but it feels too busy when I'm wearing it, even without the necklace. I'll leave it up to you guys to decide for yourselves though. Do you think Solange's outfit works in real life? Would you wear it?

I actually LOVE your outfit! i would probably feel the same way but it seem fun to wear on a hot saturday doing errands.
ReplyDeleteI actually really think it works! It's so eye-catching, and not too clashy. WEAR IT!!!!
ReplyDeletelove this outfit! loving stripe tops!

I would totally wear this, but I'm a little crazy!

If your necklace had red in it, it might help pull the entire look together. The current necklace is a disconnect.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't get the stripe with pattern trend that has popped up. It works for Solange but if I saw an everyday person out on the street wearing this trend I would think, what a hot mess!
i would wear it too! i wouldn't have even attempted to recreate this original but you did an excellent job (once again!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI think with something this crazy you need to be totally comfortable with it yourself to be able to pull it off - I wouldn't be able to, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteYou could wear a paper bag and look stylish, so you can pull it off! lol
ReplyDeletePersonally, I love your choice of shorts, shoes and necklace...but would opt for a top that is a little less baggy. It would overwhelm my frame and I think it looks too boxy (on Solange).
I do like mixing patterns but I think a little more cohesion in this combo would make it better.
:)
i actually think it looks quirky and fun! i say go for it!

could you please do more posts with the burgandy jeans from target? or with royal blue jeans?
ReplyDeleteI think you look very cute but I think I might feel like you if I had it on. You look great though :)

I love Solange's outfit and I definitely think it could work in real life, but I agree that something seems to get lost in the translation here. Your shorts are fabulous and they seem more structured than Solange's so maybe if you balanced out the top with a tighter shirt as well--like the striped one from H&M you have? Creepy that I remember that? I have the same one!

ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your blog and you always look beautiful! (Even if you get frustrated.) Try your outfit with a striped t-shirt instead of the more structured Limited shirt to see what that looks like.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate that you share your outfit putting together process of things you love AND things that make you fidget because I feel so frustrated sometimes and it makes me feel better to know that it is a process and things don't come out perfectly everytime.
I can't wait to see what you do tomorrow!
Feel better soon!
I think this is really cute! I actually bought that shirt after seeing your first post on it (I bought the jeans too). I think the crazy patterns work really well together and I especially love the necklace with it! Rock it!

Yes I think the outfit works well, breaks rules and shows you street style is not matchy matchy
ReplyDeleteI think the difference is that Solange is sporting that fierce afro. You look at the outfit, think "Wow" but your eyes are quickly guided upwards towards her hair and face. Trying very hard not to insult your hair (cuz really I'm not, it's just not a big eye catching afro is all), I think with your outfit the eye rest more on the outfit itself and that's why it is feeling like it's a bit much. Also, in the Solange pic her face is certainly more of the focus, so it could be that her outfit is just as busy if you were to see her from the same perscpective and under the same lighting that you have. I actually like your outfit better tbh, her shoes feel a bit jarring to me.
ReplyDeleteI love this look! But I think that's because I have an obsession with pattern mixing at the moment. I have a blue tribal printed skirt like that and I love to pair it with a striped shirt as well.

I think you need the hair. Its so loud it tones down the rest of the outfit (it looks great tho!)
ReplyDeleteI think you look great, but as you say, just a tiny overloaded... It could have something to do with the shorts; if they were more "whitey" than "orangey"... Could tone it down.
ReplyDeleteI like both looks, yours and Solange's and I would wear both with slight changes for my own personality. I like her necklace better with her top, but your shoes look WAY better than hers. I like your necklace but it seems to be pulling on the top and causing your shoulders to look slumped. I would say keep at it, this could totally translate to real life.
ReplyDeleteI don't love it, but I could learn to like it. It seems very busy for me; however, I like all the pieces separately.
ReplyDeleteThis one is not my favorite. But I have the blouse you are wearing, love it!!

I love Solange's entire look and I like your's, minus the necklace. To me, that's what makes this outfit too busy. Still very cute though!
ReplyDeleteOn another note, I love your blog! I believe you are very genuine in your goals for women in fashion. I appreciate your runway to real life approach and use your blog as inspiration for myself! Thanks for being a role model blogger!
I totally agree Kim - I love Solange's fierce hair!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Tons more ideas with the burgundy jeans coming up, I just try to space them out :-)
ReplyDeleteI like crazy! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love the whole look! I would not wear Solange's version though. I think it works...even with your necklace. I'd definitely wear it.
ReplyDeleteThey look looks great on you. I certainly couldn't pull it off.

I would totally wear that in real life! So cute! www.dreamboatfashion,com
ReplyDeleteyour is better!
ReplyDeleteI think without the necklace and bracelets and shoes (they make it busy like you tried too hard) the combo works!! Get well soon!
ReplyDeleteJust bought that bag on LBB! I've been admiring yours for a while :)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, its a bit much. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad with a simple necklace? Or keep the necklace and do a plain black top? I don't know, maybe I'm too boring!

I really like this. I agree with an earlier comment about trying a necklace with more red in it. I would rock this and I think you should, too. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit much with Solange's hair, but you're rocking it!!

I think who chooses this look in the real world would have to wear it with a lot of confidence/swagger. I also think Solange pulls off this outfit because it is in line with her "boho chic" style, and it is a kind of look people would expect from her. Her hair style plays a big part in the success of this look. I think one with straighter hair, should try putting their hair up in a messy bun or a loose braid to the side. I like your shoes with this kind of outfit better. Some reworking of the outfit may be necessary for those of us who are cameleons when it comes to personal style, or subscribe to other types of styles. For example: a more preppy take on this look here: http://www.classygirlswearpearls.com/2012/07/island-park-portsmouth.html. I personally could not pull off this look. I tend to approach print clashing in a more classic style, as I did here with my black and white striped top: http://coverupchic.blogspot.ca/2012/09/fall-suiting-emerald-green-and-stripes.html
ReplyDeleteI know I could not pull it off. I am not loving the necklace with that neckline. But I think any outfit is all about the confidence you exude. If you feel good about yourself, your outfit will work.

I think I agree with you. This look just comes off way too busy.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason it works on Solange is because her dark hair ties together with the dark stripes on the shirt. Maybe this look would have worked better on you if you had chosen different color stripes, maybe white and tan to tie in with your hair color? Some other people suggested wearing your hair up and I think that's a good suggestion because the heavy necklace and long heavy hair kind of weighs the whole look down and doesn't flatter/elongate the neck. I always love seeing your runway to realway looks though, and I still think you look great, but it's just a little riskier of an outfit than normal. Here in the Mission District of San Francisco, people would love it!
ReplyDeletehmmm I like the idea but i think i agree with you- in real life this might be too busy. nice try though!

I think your look is great! Something about Sonange's necklace, the turquoise, I think really works for me.
ReplyDeleteI love this look!!!

I think you totally pulled this look off. I love it :)
ReplyDeleteI have a question - what is your opinion on wearing a (classy looking) SHEER button down blouse, layered with a nude tank underneath, to work?
ReplyDeleteI would totally do it, but the offices I've worked in were very liberal and my boss rocked sheer blouses all the time. :-) If you are nervous about it, then i would do a thick-strap tank underneath for more coverage!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteLove it! The necklace pulls it all together!

I work in a school and wear sheer blouses all the time, but I always have a thick strap tank underneath-- Franchesca's has some great ones and all colors and lengths.

I think it photographs well, but I feel like it would be too busy for me in real life, you know what I mean? I do like that your kept your shoes simple to let the top part play out - I find Solange's shoes too clunky and the color is strange.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am trying to become a teacher as well actually! I just got my masters... but getting a teaching job is super hard in California :/
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit, but I think they necklace would be best for evening cocktails or a night out - it's a bit much for the daytime. But I love the patterns together!!
ReplyDeleteI would totally rock it, but to make you feel more comfortable you can throw on a blazer as well!
ReplyDeleteFitfashlife.blogspot.com
I like your version better! You made Solange look like she was trying too hard...
