Today's Everyday Fashion: Mixing Prints

You may have noticed in yesterday's budget post that I bought a lot of prints. That's because my favorite trend right now is mixing prints, and I simply don't have that many in my closet! I wouldn't normally pick this shirt off the rack, but it's neutral with a small print and I knew it would be perfect for mixing patterns. I paired it with an older polka dot skirt and a neon necklace a la the inspiration photo, but I'm also showing you the "safe" version below, with black pumps and small earrings. I wore this outfit yesterday for meetings, and I went with the aqua shoes and an aqua necklace not pictured (kind of a halfway point between the two). I love the idea of the neon necklace but I like the inspiration photo or one of the ones I link to below better. Which way would you wear it?

The "safe" version. Just me or does my left foot look like a hoof?

Love with the shoes with a pop of color!  Think it's such a fun look!  You make mixing prints look like a breeze, I might have to try next week.

  9. I love the bright shoes with this. I am going to be adding more prints as well with my shopping budget this month before I begin my 30x30 remix as I really don't have many now.

  11. Your version is MUCH better than the runway! I love your "safe" version but I would add the neon necklace.

How cute that you were talking to your dog!! Does the dog ever end up in any photos with you? (unintentionally) That would be a fun, blooper post :)

  12. Thanks Katie! :-) And yes, my dog is in pretty much all of the photos before I crop them. She lays and watches, she is the sweetest little thing.

  14. I kind of like the hoofy looking platform shoes of late. Makes me feel powerful in a way. Weird, i know.

Today's my birthday so come say hi on my blog!

  15. Happy Birthday! And I love it. ;-) I love these shoes, just that particular angle reminds me of a horse.

  16. I love this post!  The quirky comments really show your personality just like your outfits do!

  17. I saw these shoes at H&M, and didn't pay too much attention to them, but they actually look great !!

  18. I definitely like the first way you styled it better! The safe version is a little too monochromatic and actually kinda boring for me. Great job mixing prints though, those look great together.

  19. I think look #2 would be perfect with the necklace (no earrings..) but both outfits are great.

  20. I have everything to duplicate this outfit, yay!!! Thanks!!

  21. For some reason, I really like the safe version a lot better. Don't get me wrong, I adore your new shoes and I think the inspiration photo is great (especially because of the neon necklace). But your version just don't seem to quite fit. The second look is chic, put together and classic. I just don't see the h&m shoes and yellow necklace go with the rest of the look. Anyway, it's mainly about the two prints you mixed and I think they look gorgeous together. The blouse is flattering on you.

I had been looking for a bright neon yellow necklace for awhile and had my eye on this one from Limited, but didn't want to pay the $24.95 for it.  Today, in stores, Limited is offering 40% off of everything, so I took advantage and got the necklace for only $14.97.  Can't wait to wear it!!

  24. I like the pop of neon with the outfit, but not this necklace in particular. I think that it isn't the right length with the detail and neckline of the shirt.

  25. I usually really love your outfits, but this one just doesn't do it for me. I love the teal shoes, love the neon necklace, love the skirt....it just doesn't fit well all together for me. I like the safe version of this outfit much better.

  26. I remember being taught that you can mix prints as long as they are of the same color scheme.  I really love #1 but if you work in a conservative office, the safe outfit would be best.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow! You've definitely got the mixing prints trend down. I love the look!

I love both looks...neon for work would be tough for me. I really like your heels from H & M....are they comfy?

I am digging on prints as well but always drawn to polka dots or stripes. I just paired the same skirt with a floral top for work.

  29. I'm not sure what it is, maybe just the angle of the picture, but I don't like the way the blouse is fitting in the top picture.  Makes you look thick around the middle, which you definitely are not. Maybe it's the necklace.  But, I love your blog and taste and sense of fun and style.  Thank you for doing all the hard work for the rest of us.

  30. I love these outfits...I am encourage to wear more color when I see your outfits.  I usually am the one wearing the "safe" outfits but would LOVE LOVE LOVE to step out of my comfort zone and wear different colors/patterns together.  Thank you soo much for your blog!

  31. this is my favorite outfit in a while! i LOVE the pop of neon and those shoes are great. they look much better on feet than just online.

  32. Just came across your blog and LOVE IT!  It's so refreshing to read a fashion blog where everything is not courtesy of a designer :)  Reminds you that fashion can be achievable on any budget!  Looking forward to following you!!!

  35. Thank you Cindy! One of the things I'm always telling my shopping clients is that right outside your comfort zone is often when you look and feel your best. Honored to be a small part of that for you! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Haike! I think the blouse is kind of spilling out a little in the top pic. You can see how it blouses over the skirt better in the second photo.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Totally agree Jennifer! #1 is definitely not great for a conservative office dress code.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Totally agree Liz! As I said in the post, the neon necklace in the photo or one of the necklaces I link to would be much a better shape with this look.

  39. I love that necklace too Stephanie! I just got a yellow statement necklace in the mail yesterday, so you'll be seeing one often on the blog! :-)

The limited sales lady actually said that it looks really good to buy two of their necklaces in the same color and double it up to give it a bigger, bolder look.  I might think about trying to get another one soon to do that.

Can't wait to see your new one!!

  41. Love the neon punch!! I would have probably worn the black shoes from your "safe" version with the neon necklace but enjoyed seeing the various ways you styled traditional black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you Katelyn! :-) Shoes are black, skirt is dark navy and shirt is a lighter navy color.

  45. I like the outfit with the pops of color and the mixed patterns! However, I'm really into mixing patterns lately, so I might be biased! I do like that there is also the option to "tone it down" if you want to...always good to have options!
