I'm on the fence about this look. I love the J.Crew inspiration, and I gave it a try by inverting the lavender top for a lavender bottom, and a printed bottom for a printed top. I have an ivory/black striped shirt didn't look quite right with this, so a graphic tee did the trick. And I stuck with the theme of printed shoes with my leopard pumps. Today I'm leaving it up to you guys to decide though - would you wear this look? Also, I'm also sharing what is currently on my shopping wish list below! I hope to find the same or similar items over the next few months.

I love this look! I think it's great how it's a little thrown together and a little rock n roll.
ReplyDeleteI like it when you play outside the box!
I would totally wear it. It's kind of rock n' roll.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the color block skirt is on your list. I just purchased it and am not sure what top to wear with it.... Orange and yellow are out as I look awful in those colors... I was thinking a hot pink or red top... maybe coral. What do you plan on wearing with it? THANKS!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love that colorblock skirt from the Limited. I have a "statement" pencil skirt obsession I think.
ReplyDeleteI prefer your look over the Jcrew one. I love the color blocking and prints and it is just a fun look all around :-)

LOVE the orange/red and lavender color combo!
ReplyDeleteI ABSOLUTELY love this look! I just added it to my pinterest for clothing ideas because it's so cool yet sweet looking at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't feel right to me, but you can pull anything off. I would wear it with darker plum/purple color jeans to push it into my comfort zone. I love the tee. Great shopping list. Looks like the pencil skirt ban has lifted!!!
ReplyDeleteAndi, I love that idea - my plum jeans might look even better with this. And yes - I did two months with no pencil skirts, but now that shopping ban is over. :-) Lately I've had many occasions to wear them, so I'm on the hunt.
ReplyDeleteJenny, that skirt is my #1 this month, I've been contemplating a skirt like that for awhile and I'm ready to take the plunge. I'm wanting to do a color-blocked shirt with it - something neutral like camel/black, but also bright colors like pink/red. White and black pretty much go with anything, so any solid color top would look good!
ReplyDeleteI bought the Banana Republic white sheath dress for my engagement photos and love how it fits. However, now that the photos are over I'm at a bit of a loss for how to style it - a white dress seems inappropriate for most occasions. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it or something similar once you track it down!
ReplyDeleteas a leopard print maniac.. i am still on the fence about leopard pants. i like how you switched it for shoes instead...
ReplyDeleteyou definitely pull it off - i don't think i could pull it off - it's a little TOO risky for me (although i have been trying to take more fashion risks) - you rock girl!
ReplyDeleteCute outfit! I would totally rock it, though I'd probably wear a solid tee/tank (maybe a darker shade of purple) instead of the printed one. I'm just not a printed tee type of gal. Love the leopard pumps. Leopard pumps are on my shopping wish list right now!
ReplyDeleteI usually love your looks but this one seems off. The graphic tee takes away from this outfit for me.
ReplyDeleteEmily, I want to style it with a thick brown belt, brown shoes and a big statement necklace! I think it's a great dress for work or church. If I can't find the Banana one in my size, I'll be looking for a similar dress by Calvin Klein or another good brand.
ReplyDeleteI just bought a kelly green skirt like the one on your wish list. But I have yet to wear it because I am not sure what to wear it with. What were your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your wishlist every month. It gives me inspiration for what I want to get in my closet!

Magdelana, I believe strongly that if you like every outfit I post, I'm not doing my job! :-) The point of J's is to post outfit fails and experiments - because that is often the best way to learn, and I would never want a "perfect" website. The good, the bad, the ugly - you can find it all right here!
ReplyDeleteI love that color with blue tones, yellow tones, even purple. I don't have any specific outfits in mind (I generally don't when I buy an item), but I know that skirt has tons of potential!
ReplyDeleteI am new to your site and already in love. My outfit today is inspired by you! Thank you for taking me outside of my comfort zone :)
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt and the shoes!! Both are currently on my shopping list. Aldo has some great colorful pumps http://www.aldoshoes.com/us/women/shoes/high-heels/89276782-lillig/6
Thanks Marissa, so glad I could inspire you! And great minds think alike because I also have my eye on those Aldo pumps! I've found that Aldo shoes aren't very comfy (the fit is strange, maybe it's my big feet?). But I love the color!
ReplyDeleteI like your look better!! And I have a question for you too about your Limited pink jeans. I tried them on in the store and they fit perfectly, but the sales associate told me to go down a size because they stretch quite a bit. Only problem is they don't have a size smaller online or in stores. What has your experience been with yours? Do they stretch out a lot? Thanks J! LOVE your blog.

Thanks Abby! I haven't worn the pink jeans yet. (I try to save my new stuff and wear it slowly throughout the month.) I can already tell I'm going to have to put them in the dryer though. I got my normal size, but only because the size smaller wasn't available. They fit great through the hips/legs, but the waist seems big so hopefully they don't wind up stretching out too much!
ReplyDeleteI know I've said this before, but I think I like your version better!
ReplyDeletework-it-blog.blogspot.com
I have a green pencil skirt and I have worn it 4 ways so far. With a navy blue/white polka dot blouse, with a black and white striped shirt (my favorite and got the most compliments), with a pale minty lace sleeved tee, and with plain white. I'd love to find a soft yellow to wear with it.
ReplyDeleteI think it would look great with cobalt blue.
ReplyDeleteI actually think this combo is cute--I couldn't pull it off, but I like the look!
ReplyDeleteYour wishlists and outfits have really inspired me to shop with more intention--I went to Forever 21 on my lunch break and usually I just kind of wander aimlessly, but today I had my little wishlist with me (based on some inspiration outfits from your blog!) and I made sure I got what I came for with the intention of actually mixing and matching some pieces! I'm hoping to find some items I can actually wear more than once. It was still overwhelming, but a little less so.
It does seem like they've changed their return policy--I tried to return a few items I was iffy about without a receipt and they said they no longer do that :(
Mara, that sounds like a great strategy for shopping F21! And thanks for the heads up about their return policy, I've been meaning to update that old post with that info! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this look! It's one of my favorites, actually. I think that the graphic tee and the shoes make it. :)
ReplyDeleteHey J! I love your blog! Sometimes I'm unable to view your photos (usually the examples of similar items show up, but not always). Do you have any idea why this might be? I use Google Reader primarily (but this is still true when I click through to your blog sometimes) in Google Chrome. Thanks for any thoughts!! Keep up the awesome work!
ReplyDeleteLong time reader, first time to comment (:
ReplyDeleteYour blog offers realistic fashion ideas AND reasonable prices for cute outfits!!! You’re one of a kind and it’s just really refreshing!
I don’t even have a fashion blog … mine is my amateur photography, but I work full time in an office setting, so checking your blog everyday for my fashion inspiration is always a treat (:

This is a cute look J! Question---I notice you are wearing close-toed shoes here, but I assume it's warm out? Do you think close-toe shoes are appropriate for a formal Spring wedding? I don't have any open-toe ones that match my dress!
ReplyDeleteI love this look!
ReplyDeletehmm, I'm not crazy about the graphic print...love the rest though!
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly how they fit me too. But they are so cute, I might just have to go back and get them. Like you said, there is always the dryer! Thanks J!! :)
ReplyDeleteLove how you took the j.crew look, flipped the color around a bit, and made it look better than the inspiration photo! Love the graphic tee too!
ReplyDeletehttp://allthingsprettyandlittle.blogspot.com/
the Jcrew leopard print is more yellow which goes better with the lavender than your orange-brown based print shoe, plus your cardigan has a boatneck shaped collar which doesn't lay as nice and with your short necklace...that stops the eye up top as well - the jcrew cardigan has a long V neckline and the necklace is long and visually pleasing
ReplyDeleteplus her orange cardigan is actually completed visually by her orange toe polish - they think of everything - geez!!! I totally love your tee and pants together with her shoes - a blk.wht print that would rock the look!

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of lavender and red together, so this doesn't do much for me. I'd much prefer to see a darker/brighter purple with the red.
ReplyDeleteI love your wish list, however.
Casey, yes absolutely! I think close-toe pumps work year-round. (Whereas open-toe is not so great for winter.) A lighter color like nude is perfect for summer, but you could get away with a black close-toe now, too!
ReplyDeletePaula, boo, that is no fun. No idea why it is doing that. I am moving to self-hosting this fall, so I will keep that in mind when talking to my developers! Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Angela, I'm so happy you said hi! And thank you for the kind feedback, I really appreciate it! :-)
ReplyDeleteGina, this is exactly why I like posting outfit "fails/experiments" like these - it gets the noggin thinking. These are all great observations!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you reinvented this look. I would never think to wear lavender pants but you're rocking them! Shoes are a great touch too.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this color combo.... you wear it well, and I like it much better than the J Crew version!
ReplyDeleteYou look soo pretty! The dress
suits you very well, I’m in love with your style!
Uhmm...I would totally wear this outfit, but no heels for me :-)
ReplyDeleteJ, Old Navy has the blue rocker pants on sale for $15 right now :) <3 your blog!
ReplyDeleteI really like the look of your outfit but I'd lose or change the necklace. Nice shoes!
ReplyDeleteI don't like to say this, but it's def. an outfit fail for me. It doesn't match at all. Also I'm not a big fan of lavender and red together, but that's just my personal opinion. So no, I wouldn't wear this look.
ReplyDeleteDo not like and would never wear a graphic tee. The blouse on your wishlist would be much better. Better neckline too!
ReplyDeletea cute and creative look, but for your age group!!!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing! The shirt on my wish list almost matches the J.Crew pants! :-)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on this one Lena! Not my personal style.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I think the graphic tee is the one thing that didn't work for me looking at this outfit. I also agree that the wish list blouse would work better. :)
ReplyDeleteI just *love* your graphic tee, lavender jeans, and leopard pumps together!! Since there seems to be a fair amount of CORAL in your graphic tee............ (i.e., with the coral car and the coral logo, to kind of "correspond to" the coral cardigan in the Inspiration Photo)............ I *wonder* how a CAMEL cardigan; or a CAMEL (summer-weight) blazer............ to then "bring out" the TAN colors in your graphic tee would look? A "warm-toned" camel cardigan or blazer might (?) also look nice with your leopard shoes, too.
ReplyDeleteInstead of then wearing a necklace, some small coral earrings (in a strong teardrop shape) similar to your Stella and Dot Serenity Stone Jade Earrings~~~except slightly-smaller and in a CORAL color instead~~~might (?) then be pretty to wear............ i.e., just to "pick up" the coral colors in your graphic tee.
**Note: Since it's your blog, I personally don't feel that you should "have to" post an outfit every day that's realistically wearable, J., because............ (as you can see from the number of really *G.*R.*E.*A.*T.* Comments generated here; AND on your Facebook page!!)............ when you post about the PROCESS of putting an outfit together; and whether OR not a specific outfit really "works"............ as opposed to a perfectly "Finished-Set-And-Done" Outfit............ well, then you're essentially "inviting" your Readers INTO............ your mind's amazing Creative Process that YOU use as a Professional Fashion Stylist!! (You also~~in your blog's Mission Statement~~actually write about sharing your failed fashion attempts AND your fashion experiments, too, with your Readers).
Additionally, (in my humble opinion), it's SUCH a sign of genuine *R.*E.*S.*P.*E.*C.*T.* to your Readers when you "consult" with us, by simply............ ASKING our honest fashion opinions!! Your Readers feel very, very *valued*, J., when OUR~~(i.n.e.x.p.e.r.t.!!)~~fashion opinions are then............ "taken seriously"............ by WONDERFULLY-CREATIVE you!!
You just inspired my outfit for speed dating tonight! Lavender straight-legged pants, white v-neck tee with bright red lip-print, leopard print round-toe wedges, lots of layered gold jewelry. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteCuteness! Have fun tonight!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this feedback Rosanna! I do very much value you guy's opinions. I don't think there are really ever any "wrong" fashion opinions, and I don't really consider myself to be a fashion expert, so it's fun to open the floor and hear what you guys (really) think, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteA wonderful post... love
the clothing.. !
Yesterday I got the same pants from Kohl's in red/'watermelon', and I noticed one of your previous posts featuring red pants with a neutral top. Any other suggestions on what color/style/tops would look good with these pants?
ReplyDeleteHi Lauren, here is a link to my Flashback Friday post, with 9 ways to wear red pants. I think mine are a slightly different color than the ones you are describing though? http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/11/flashback-friday-red-pants.html
ReplyDeleteThank you for the link! Those are some very helpful ideas! :-) The pants aren't exactly a brick red, per se, however they would go perfectly with any of the outfits you posted since it is a version of red!
