A Review: TRESemme Dry Shampoo

This post brought to you by TRESemmé. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have a confession: I am a baby powder junkie. Meaning, I use it on my roots on an almost daily basis. (Anyone else do this?) Or at least I was a junkie until the folks at TRESemme sent me some of their Dry Shampoo to try. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but friends, you will no longer see me shopping in the baby section for hair products because I am a total convert to their TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo. Thinking about giving it a try? Follow these 3 easy steps:

1. Shake the can vigorously, lift sections of dry hair and spray in short bursts at your roots holding the can 8-12 inches from head. (You don't need to spray all over your head/anywhere else, just your visible roots.)

2. At first, it actually makes your hair look wet, or even more oily. Don't panic. Just let it sit for 1-2 minutes and let it do it's thing.

3. You will notice at this point that the product has turned slightly white, almost like a light dusting of powder. Use fingertips or a brush to distribute product and kind of rub it in.

Voila! Your roots look and feel clean, and as an added bonus it also makes your dark roots look less obvious if you are due for a touch up at the salon. :-) Want more info? Check out this YouTube about Top Hair Products for School and leave your tips for using dry shampoo in the comment section!

  1. I've used two dry shampoos in the past: this one (TRESemme Dry Shampoo) and Batiste Dry Shampoo. I like them both but for different reasons. For me, I use dry shampoo in the morning if I am not taking a shower. My hair is so thin that it gets greasy at the end of the day, let alone second day.

Sometimes I wake up and my hair just needs to be pulled back into a bun and the roots just need to be de-greasified. If that is the case, I would recommend the Batiste Shampoo. It is a lot lighter and just helps to get your hair a fresher look. However, if you are going to use the TRESemme Dry Shampoo, you HAVE to style your hair. It is a very heavy product so it provides a lot of volume. So, you would have to straighten (or curl or pin or whatever) your hair as it gives a lot of volume so you can't just put it in and run out the door. That being said, when I use the TRESemme, I actually find my hair styles a lot better than if I had just come out of the shower. It provides volume (lots of it) and helps your hair hold and shine (if you straighten).

Whew - that was a long comment but that's my experience with dry shampoo!

  2. I love dry shampoo, and never thought I would!  I have thick hair and it gets very oily, and I couldn't stand to not wash my hair every day.  But washing my hair every single day dries the rest of it out (besides the root area) and strips my color faster, so I tried a dry shampoo.  I had tried baby powder before, but I always felt like something was "in" my hair, and although it made it look non-greasy, it still felt dirty.  But I bought the Ojon Rub Out Dry Cleansing Powder, and it's awesome.  When I use it, it looks like I washed my hair, and it feels clean, too.  Awesome stuff!  Now, I'm washing about every other day, and it is so great not having to blow dry AND flat iron every single day.

Oh, and J, just wanted to tell you I am a fellow big foot girl, ha ha!  I'm wearing a size 9.5 (ok, sometimes a 10), and I'm only 5'5", so you can imagine how that looks!  I used to get away with a 9, but I'm pretty sure pregnancy increased the size of my feet (even though I never believed that could happen b/f it happened to me!). : )

  3. I am addicted to dry shampoo!   Using dry shampoo is the only way i have been able to let my hair grow out the past year....allowing me to not have to wash my hair daily.  I have tried the TRESemme but still keep going back to Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Powder...available at Sephora.  I live by this stuff....cannot be without.  It has a lemon smell (which can be a turn off) but I pour a bit in my hand and rub it vigorously through my roots...greasy is GONE!  LOVE it!!

  4. I have tried the Suave dry shampoo, as well as using baby powder.  I will definitely give this a try because although they both work ok, it doesn't always work for all day.  Does the TRESemme have staying power all day without making your oily later?

  6. Thank you for the tip, I also have extremely thick hair so that might work for me! And YES I totally feel your pain on the foot size. I'm a tad taller than you, but still feel like my feet are too big (long) for my body! We should start a support group. :-)

  7. Thank you so much for sharing this! I always style my hair if I'm using the dry shampoo, so that factor never occurred to me  I never, ever use products in my hair, so I will say that using it makes me feel like I have product in my hair, it's kind of a "thick" feeling, even though you can't see anything. I agree it helps with styling though and gives a little volume to my roots. :-)

  8. I just bought the Tresemme Fresh Start from Target, I got the foam however and like it A LOT more than the spray fresh start. The foam doesn't leave any white specs like the spray did on my hair. I have brown hair too so the spray could be better if you are blonde. Love this stuff though, use it on my bangs especially since those are the first to get oily!

  10. I am an AVID baby powder user. My favorite dry shampoo is Psssst! But even that can't turn me off of my baby powder. It's so cheap and works better than any dry shampoo I've come across. :) I have used the TRESemme dry shampoo before but like you said, it made my hair appear even more oily than before. I might have to take your advice though and try it again following your steps.

  11. I've never noticed my hair looking oily later in the day! You can kind of feel the product in your hair (I'm not used to using anything in my hair, so it's a new feeling to me) but other than that it looks great.

  12. Meh, I'm not a fan of the Tresemme stuff. I tried it once and initially loved it, but then the can ended up only lasting me around 8-10 uses and then it just became oily (stopped turning white). Not sure if I got a bad can or what, but it started making my hair even greasier no matter how well I shook it up before applying. I've since switched back to baby powder which is always reliable and lasts wayyy longer.

  13. Oh man, I love dry shampoo. I used to use baby powder as well but as a brunette, I often ended up with some whiteish looking hair! Eek! I've used the Tresemme in the past though and liked it but found that it didn't give my hair the volume it promised. Everyone talks about the Oscar Blandi one so I think I'll try that next!

  14. Good tips on the video. I use the Tresseme Dry Shampoo now, and I think I was applying it wrong. It didn't seem to last all day, but it's definitely good. I have fine, curly hair that I straighten, so this is great for the in-between days that I don't wet shampoo. I am interested in trying the foam as well.

  15. IMO, the tresemme dry shampoo is the worst one I've tried. It makes my hair feel dirtier and "gummy." I prefer either baby powder, Suave Dry Shampoo or Serge Normant dry shampoo. I am glad it works for you though, I guess it doesn't work for my hair type (and I dislike the smell of it too).

  16. Kate, that sounds like a bad can to me. I've used my can at least 20 times already and it still seems to be really full. If baby powder is working for you though, I say go for it. :-)

  19. I was using tresemme, its great for after the gym as well, but my last bottle got stuck & wouldn't spray when it was nearly full - so I decided it was time to try another brand and found a (volumizing) dry shampoo by John Frieda, whose brand I trust just a bit more. Smells great & so far so good.

  20. I having been using dry shampoo for a while now (former baby powder user). Tresemme is one of my least favorites. My all time favorite is Batiste- it gives me the best results as far as freshening up and degreasing. They also sell a travel size. If I don't have time to go a beauty supply shop then I like the John Frieda dry shampoo.
