Today's Everyday Fashion: Fantasy or Real Life?

This outfit may look familiar (it's very similar to what I wore for my photo shoot with Layne Haley  here). A photo shoot is fantasy though, and I want to talk about how an outfit like this could work for real life. I like to say that you shouldn't leave the house in an outfit that could fit in at a costume party - and I think this look might be pushing those boundaries. On the other hand, though, 70's is such a huge trend and I have seen girls wearing headbands like this and they always look ah-dorable. Tell me what you think - does this work in real life? Would you wear a headband like this and where would you wear it?

Occasion: Music festival?
Inspiration photo: Express
Shirt: c/o MJR Sales, $14
Shorts: American Eagle, $25
Necklace: H&M, $8
Belt: Aberrombie, really old
Shoes: c/o Chinese Laundry
Headband: A 50 cent piece of leather from a craft store

  1. I love the headband on you! I would look ridiculous in that but...I'm old. And that's for you young chaps.

The only thing that worries me about the outfit is the all white. I'd have spaghetti on that in about 15 minutes, and I don't even eat spaghetti. :-)

  2. Honestly, while it looks ADORABLE on you, I still think it's too costume-y. Taking the headband off would lose some of the costume factor, but...eh... I wouldn't wear it outside the house, LOL. Frankly, though, I have nowhere to wear something like this, as I could NEVER wear this to work (I could just imagine the looks on my coworkers' faces if I showed up to the office wearing this!!), and on the weekends, I turn into a shlubby t-shirt and shorts girl, unless the DH and I go out somewhere :) Hey, a girl needs a break once in a while! :)

BTW, white is an AWESOME color on you!

  3. I think the trend is cute on you! I say rock it in the outside world, not too costumey.

  4. I think its Fantasy for me. But with those legs of yours girl. You can definitely pull it off.

I just found your blog and now am obsessed.

Have you thought of applying to be a leg model. Now there is another career for you if this website doesn't work out. Ha ha.

Wow! Love your style too! Jennifer

  5. It's the kind of thing that I'd notice and admire on someone else...

...but would never have the guts to wear myself.

I say go for it if you're self-confident enough that you don't mind when people look at you!

  6. I wouldn't wear the headband. I think that's what's pushing it into costume-land, however you could wear the headband with something else and it would look fine.

  7. I too love the headbands but at 38yrs of age, I feel like I'm too old to pull off that look.  However, if my hair was up in a pony I would use the band to hold scraggly hairs back ;o)
This does have a very cute, Hippy-chic look tho.

  8. You look cute in the headband, but yeah, I think this look has definitely crossed over into costumey. I would never feel comfortable wearing it out. The white does look great against your hair and skin tone, though.

  9. Very cute w/ the accessories--your spin in very fun!  However, the top is a bit too tight/revealing paired with those short.  I think what really works with the model photo is the balance of the flowy top (despite the off-shoulder neckline)

    Cute, though! :)

  10. Emily, it's hard tot tell in the picture  - but this white shirt is really baggy on me actually! :-)  If you look closely you can see a bunch of it sticking out from underneath the belt and also billowing over the top of it.

  11. Samantha, what would you wear the headband with to make it less costume-y?

  12. I would totally wear this in real life! Love it!

  13. I think you can pull it off for an event like that.  I actually love your hair curly/wavy but today it looks so great also!  I say wear the outfit, but don't get a tan line on your head from the head band ;-)

Thanks Amy! I am a total psycho about putting SPF on my face (it's in my moisturizer, makeup and I add a 3rd layer if I'm at the beach). It hasn't seen in the sun in years! :-)

  15. I would wear the headband with a loose fitting top and skinny jeans or a t-shirt and boots. Or even a maxi dress, like Nicole Richie. Or check out these images.

  16. It is definitely not my thing. I doubt I'd wear it ... but if it were my thing ... I would wear it everywhere ... like I wear my other clothes and accessories. :o)

It suits you! You almost nailed this inspiration to the T!

  17. I would definitely wear that outfit, just not the headband haha :)

  18. I'm the person who would end up with a big tan line on my forehead. I think it looks cute though.

  19. Eh, not crazy about the headband. I think you have to be college age to get away with it.

  20. I love this outfit ... except for the headband. But to be fair, I don't think these headbands look good on anybody, including Nicole Richie and Vanessa Hudgens. They always remind me of Pocahontas costumes from childhood Thanksgiving pageants!

  21. I think you look completely adorable in this outfit INCLUDING the headband.  I don't think it looks
costume-y at all.  You could wear it shopping, out to dinner, movies, etc.  Love it!

  22. Then how are you so tan???

  23. I agree; I think the headband is very cute on you. I'm thinking it might only look costume-y because of the combination of the necklace, the fringe on the belt and the fringe on the shoes.

  24. My natural skin color is very olive. If I do get some sun (I always wear SPF) then I will use makeup on my face to blend in with my golden glow. I'm not in the sun a lot though, it's mostly genetics!

  25. Yes this totally works in real life! It's great for a casual party, drinks with friends, shopping, whatever. I love it. I have two headbands like that - I don't wear them too often but I do wear them. And love them!
