Today's Everyday Fashion: Statement Piece

Inspiration: Pinterest

Today, we explore layering statement accesories over a striped top. First I tried a leopard scarf inspired by Pinterest, and then I tried a statement necklace. I love how only one thing was changed, but they look like totally different outfits. Also, I've got fun, colorful sneakers on my shopping wish list, so I thought I'd share what I've found so far, below. Which outfit is your favorite? Which sneakers do you like?

Shirt: Conversation Pieces c/o, $24
Skirt: Limited, $20 (similar, similar, similar, similar)
Belt: H&M, $20
Scarf: Ross c/o (similar, similar)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot, $114
Shoes: Nine West c/o, $62 (similar, similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Rings: My Stella & Dot 1, 2
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot 1, 2, 3

  3. I like them both, but I think the second option is my favorite. As for the shoes, they are all fun! It depends on what would be best for your feet (those asics shoes would probably be the best for me)

  7. I really the necklace....I always (personally) find scarves a bit awkward to wear, and LOVE necklaces.  I think the necklace look is more streamlined/tailored.  Those sneakers are super bright!  I would go for whatever is most comfortable, but i haven't yet gotten into the sneakers-as-fashion movement; I only wear them for working out/running, so I don't really care what they look like.

  8. The leopard/stripe combo really ups the sophistication of this outfit. I'm a big fan.

  15. i think i like the outfit without the scarf better as it looks simple and clean, but the scarf works . surprisingly well with it. i'd never have matched the two

  16. This outfit is so cute! I absolutely love this skirt, the color and fit/length is perfect. I have seen you style it many different ways and I want an identical one so bad! Sadly I can't find one that lives up to my high standards! :))

  17. I swear by Asics, have always and will always train with them - bought these in pink last year, and not only have they kept me injury-free during my tri training, I get compliments on them nearly every time I wear them. http://www.6pm.com/asics-gel-noosa-tri-7-neon-orange-white-turquoise?zfcTest=mat%3A1 Best part - the soles glow in the dark!!!

  18. I like the second or third pair, but love Nike's new line (I think it's the run+ series?)... they are so cute!! Love the stripes and camel together :)

  19. I like the dark purple pumas! And I love the leopard scarf, I have one just like the one pictured on pinterest!

  20. The outfit with the scarf is definitely my favorite - it just ties everything all together. As for the sneakers...I like the light blue New Balance sneakers but only for working out. I'm not much into wearing sneakers with your everyday outfits. As a shorter person, I have a hard time wearing flats, let alone sneakers with my outfits :) But I'm sure someone who is tall could pull it off well!

  21. I love the scarf and stripes.. you really can't go wrong with stripes and leopard ;) My favorite sneakers are the pink and yellow Puma and the blue and pink New Balance. Can't wait to see which ones you end up with!

  24. I love the scarf with the shirt! I am not loving the new bright sneaker kick I guess. But if I had to choose, I would say the 2nd, or 7th pair. Thanks for today's inspiration. I am looking for a navy striped shirt just like that, and I already have the scarf.

  25. I love mixing prints and you can't ever go wrong with stripes and leopard!! Also, statement pieces are great in that if you're going somewhere a little fancy and you want to wear a necklace, but it's still cold out you can throw on the scarf and get a little bit of both outfits in one night. As for the sneakers, go for the second pair!!

  26. I love those Puma's!!  Skecher's GoRunRide also come in fun colors, and they are highly recommended as awesome running shoes.  I have the blue & coral pair.

  27. I love leopard with stripes! Can I make one suggestion? When you post your inspiration photo, you often just post the source as "pinterest" and link back to your own pinterest. I think pinterest is an awesome way to get inpiration (pinspiration?), but when you post it on your blog, linking to the original blog seems the most respectful to the person whose outfit you're drawing inspiration from, and would be helpful when I want to see the rest/more of the outfit! :)

  28. Nina, too funny, someone just asked a similar question on another post, so I'll copy + paste some of what I just wrote! I could be mistaken, but I thought this photo was from a boutique. :-) Hope this helps!

I love Pinterest to death, but it has many copyright-related faults. One Pinterest issue, is how do you cite where the photo came from? I don't have any personal knowledge of where this photo came from, other than Pinterest, and I'm providing the exact link where I found it on Pinterest. So I'm not sure how else I could be doing that better. If I cite the original source, that's not really where I got the photo so it feels deceptive to me. And if the link is working on Pinterest, it's still going to that original person/company. If the situation was reversed, I would have no problem with someone doing it the exact way I've done here, with my photo on their blog.

That said, as a blogger, I'm certainly sensitive to copyright issues and I'm always happy to change or fix a link if something is broken. I've done this many times for bloggers or readers who have provided additional credit info in the past! Just shoot me an email if that ever happens! :-)

  37. I love the pink puma sneakers! Those are tennis sneakers though, so if your not going to play tennis I would suggest not wearing them since it's bad for your knees to wear them for regular exercises. My second choice are the neon yellow new balance ones!

  40. If you are only interested in a fashion piece rather than going for something that will double as functional, I would recommend Converse All Stars. They are timeless, affordable, will never go out of style, and come in sooo many different colors and patterns!

  41. I love the scarf/stripy shirt combo! And I really only buy sneakers that are functional, I just try to find cute colors in sneakers that will fit my needs. I have a really cute pair of neon yellow Brooks and a pair of hot pink Asics that I love :)

  46. I have the blue and yellow New Balance and LOVE them! As a plus, I work in a hospital so I'm on my feet all day and these have saved my back. It's also cute when the older people comment on how "bright" they are ;)

And I love the stripes and leopard!

  47. I love how changing the accessories totally changes the look!

So, what are you going to use the sneakers for? If its just fashion, I like Pumas (the purple or teal) because they are lower profile. However, if you are going to use them for running/the gym, I highly recommend that you go to a running store and get fitted properly. Good stores have lots of fun/bright options. Good luck! :-)

  49. Both outfits are great, but I really like the necklace.  The colors in the necklace tie the look together, and the tribal look of the necklace is a nice juxtaposition to the preppier outfit.

  51. I love both outfits!!    For dressy wear in  *c.o.l.d.*  weather, I think the first outfit with the leopard scarf would look great............ maybe also with semi-sheer cognac tights for warmth............ and your full-length, Winter-white wool coat, too!!    (Wouldn't your leopard scarf just *pop!!* against Winter white. J.??............ i.e., much like a REAL leopard "stands out" against the snow!!)

Your second outfit with the necklace exudes so much  *w.a.r.m.t.h.*............ i.e., with the (cognac-brown), genuine leather bib of your Stella & Dot Indira Necklace............ with your (cognac-brown) leather belt............ and with your (cognac-brown) leather platform pumps!!    Your "Sophisticated Tribal" Indira Statement Necklace simply looks  *so striking*  against your shirt's............ white stripes on a navy background!!

  53. An iron! My kingdom for an iron! It looks great both ways, except for the part where it needs badly to be ironed. (and probably some credit to that blogger in the picture whose pinterest link is dead...plus we all know pinterest is dubious at best as a citation).

  54. I definitely like the outfit with the leopard scarf. And I'm a fan of the pink Pumas.

  55. I love the leopard scarf look! And the turquoise New Balance shoes are my fave. LOVE!

  56. I was surprised when I scrolled down and saw the necklace outfit - it looks so different! I really think I like them both equally - but in different weather environments. I live in DC, so the scarf outfit would be great in the cooler months, and the necklace outfit would be nice in the warmer months.

I like pairs 8 and 10, both New Balance (turquoise/pink and green/yellow) best. Are you going to use them for working out, or as casual wear - or both?

I think linking to your pin is fine. If you posted an inspiration outfit you saw in Lucky magazine, you wouldn't link back to the designer/store for each piece - you would link back to Lucky.

  58. I actually work for Hibbett Sports which sells athletic shoes, and asics are THE BEST SHOES IN THE WORLD! You can try on any shoe and then an asic, and I promise you'll like it more!

  59.  The difference is that Lucky is a publication with people who do accurately cite sources, name the brands, etc; Pinterest is like someone's scrapbook of clippings with no certainty about the information or any information. If the image has a copyright, is from a untrustworthy source or is otherwise in accurate no one knows. While I agree 'its just clothes' there are multitudes of things on pinterest that are not cited.
