Today I'm sharing a couple monochromatic "experiments" I recently tried while playing in my closet. The picture above is my attempt to re-create the look of a crochet dress + neon belt (love her outfit!) - without actually owning a crochet dress. It looks a bit like a dress, but I'm also not sure if I'm completely sold. Below, I gave Katie Holmes relaxed glam look a try with a sequin top, loose trousers and flat sandals. So comfy, and while not my personal style, it could be a great going out look for someone who only wears flats. What are your thoughts on my two fashion "experiments"? Would you wear them?

I really like both looks! The neutrals aren't boring at all because you have texture (crochet or sequins) and added a pop of something different with the accessories (neon or metallic).
ReplyDeleteI love the Katie Holmes look. In fact I like your version more because the color suits you better (though the darker color is better for her). Not really digging the crochet look with that particular belt. To my eyes it looks a little awkward.
ReplyDeleteI know it defies the point of "relaxed" but I think look #2 needs heels not sandals.
ReplyDeleteCasey, I agree - it would look great with heels! My pants are short and only work with flats though. :-)
ReplyDeleteNot in love with the first one. But I really like the 2nd look! Even with sandals, because they are metallic with bling, it fancies it up while still being relaxed.
ReplyDeleteThe ruffle on the first dress/skirt just underneath the top kind of throw that off for me, but you did a great job recreating the look with what you have! I love the second look and especially your "arm accessories" -- bag, bracelets, watch, ring, but I think you could've let the earrings off and I don't like the shoes at all, just not my style.
ReplyDeleteI love your relaxed glam look! I want to wear that to dinner while on vacation. I actually really like the flat, jeweled sandals. Perfect for long walks while exploring a new place or dancing the night away!
ReplyDeleteI like the second look best, and yours looks better than Katie's. Her top is gorgeous with her dark coloring, but those pants look huge! (maybe just a lesson in keeping your hands out of your pockets for photos..) Anyway, I agree with another reader that the bright belt is a little TOO bright. Those sequin tops are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteVery cool how you show your inspiration photo!

I like both, but am in love with the Katie Holmes look and think you pull it off way better! It makes me so happy that glamorous doesn't have to equal tight, uncomfortable, double-sided tape sorts of ensembles!
ReplyDeleteThe Katie Holmes look you threw together is great! I've been in love with the all sequin look! After you posted about the MJR sequin Moto Jacket, I nabbed it up. Thanks for helping me with the sizing- it fits like a glove!
ReplyDeleteThe crochet look, IMHO, doesn't pay you justice, i find the top too long but the idea is great. The second is very reassuring, a bit middleaged-ish. I can feel no challenge in it.
ReplyDeleteFirst look: I actually love the sweater on you, but the skirt is too short proportionally with the long top and the ruffles not very flattering with the long top falling over. The belt bothers me in both pictures, but I am admittedly not forward enough to think that a touch of neon looks good with an oatmeal colored outfit.
Second one: I personally love it. It doesn’t look like your typical style, but I think it looks great. It’s something I would love to try and copy.
Andi - I agree. Second one is not my personal style, however, I think it could work well on someone else!
ReplyDeleteI think the second one could work well for women in their 50's and 60's for sure!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome! I love that jacket too!
ReplyDeleteI really like that first outfit, very polished and super cute!

I like both of the outfits but I wear something similar to the bottom look all of the time! I will wear fancy sandals with white slacks. I don't know if I could with other colors...but white is definitely both casual and professional <3
ReplyDeleteLove those LC Heels!
ReplyDeleteI love the top look - your sweater is perfect and the neutral neon mix is very cool. Hope you're having a great weekend j!x
ReplyDeleteYou know what J, I have followed your pics for the last two weeks, I watched your pilot (which I loved, you are a natural) but a neon belt worn back with a simple sophisticated neutral...no, this will never work for me.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is time to stop following the 'fashion pics' and rather leading the way. I believe that you have amazing colour theory, due to practice...go for it.
I really like your lined white dress pants with heels or wedges............ (i.e., 2/8/11: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/02/todays-everyday-fashion-sequins-for.html ; 3/22/11: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/03/todays-everyday-fashion-denim.html ; and 12/14/11: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/12/todays-everyday-fashion-everything-is.html)............ but I just *L.O.V.E.* your pants with your gorgeous *jeweled* flat sandals, too, J.!! Maybe it's because your flat sandals (simply seem to) make your s.l.i.g.h.t.l.y.-f.l.a.r.e.d., lined white dress pants look a little bit............ "flowier" and "swishier"............ than either heels or wedges do??!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, because your *rich*-looking, lined, champagne-sequin top is very thick & substantial, I wonder how............ a "flowier"-and-"swishier" dressy top might also look............ WITH your s.l.i.g.h.t.l.y.-f.l.a.r.e.d., lined white dress pants and bejeweled flat sandals, too??!!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked the pilot!
ReplyDeleteAs you may have read in the caption, these outfits were not victories for me. I really believe strongly in sharing all of my fashion moments here though, even ones I don't love, and I'll tell you why!
1. Looking at someone else's fashion fails can be one of the best learning tools!
1. I want to inspire women to try new things and not worry about making fashion mistakes! That is half the fun in my book! So I share mine proudly. (More on that here: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2012/01/if-fashion-mistakes-are-wrong-i-dont.html)
2. My goal with this website is to be realistic. i never want a blog full of perfect outfits and perfect images.I want to share the WHOLE journey, not just when I get it right. We've all tried things that don't work, and I want to be sure you guys know that I'm one of those people too. :-)
Rosanna, you have a great memory! I have worn these pants with low heels, but really they are too short to be worn with much of a heel and I think I prefer them with a jeweled sandal too! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the #3 alloy crochet dress...want to buy it. cute experiments
ReplyDeletei love both looks - makes me want to go home and try on my lace dress with a yellow belt!! :) :)
ReplyDeleteI love that bright belt the best!

Super cute! Love the first outfit especially and I JUST bought that Forever 21 sequin top to wear out this past weekend! Wore it out with a beige bandage skirt and some wild leopard print heels! It is good quality for the money and I got a ton of compliments on it!
ReplyDeletelove this on you!
ReplyDeleteFound the Lauren Conrad shoes here if anyone was looking for them :)

You’re so naturally beautiful,
I wish more models were like you!
I like both! Especially that first outfit!
