This week I attended a VIP reception. Since the event was from 6-8pm on a Tuesday, I assumed the dress code would be more office than cocktails (it was) and I decided to go with a pencil skirt. I threw this outfit together in a few minutes before heading out the door - knowing full well it was a bold move with all the color, but owning every ounce of it. Most people, as it turns out, were in suits and I was definitely a bright color (although not the only one) in a sea of black. I just love bold colors, and even though I was in the minority that night this look is one of my favorites! Are you comfortable rocking color when everyone else is wearing black? Or do you prefer to blend in more?

TEAM COLOR!! Since most people came from work, they probably didn't have the option of wearing anything but boring black. The beauty of a non 40 hour a week office job girl!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this look, its so gorgeous on you!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteI love the blue skirt! I just bought a cobalt blue dress from Target. It's super comfy so I bought it in black too! I love wearing color when everyone else is wearing black. I wore a red dress on NYE and was the only one in color! I actually got "yelled" at by a drunk girl for trying too hard to stand out. Haha.

I really like the skirt + top + necklace combo. I think I would have left off the bracelets. I would like to see this with a less flashy shoe/handbag combo... maybe a leather pair of heels in a natural color- dark brown croc?
ReplyDeletegorgeous skirt, i love the color!

Bring on the color! I frequently find myself as the only one wearing color. The color-blocking look is my favorite (I have no intention of giving it up even after the fad has faded.) It gets quite a few looks when everyone else is in their standard funeral wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteLove the look, and yes, I'm down with being the only one in color. This is a little bit of a different example, but I feel like everyone in NYC has black umbrellas. I love having a really bright one to stand out. It's already dreary outside when it's raining, the sea of black doesn't help!
ReplyDeleteI found a cobalt skirt at a thrift store last winter and I'm always looking for new ways to wear it. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you wore color. Sometimes it's good to standout. Great outfit!

Great look!!! Sure like it better than the basic black suit!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, I love that Cindie! Love that you have a cheerful umbrella. :-)
ReplyDeleteFuneral wardrobe = lol.
ReplyDeleteIf you wanted to tone this look down, my cognac pumps from 3 days ago would be perfect! (I was wearing the same necklace that night, even!)
ReplyDeleteTrue, true. :-)
ReplyDeleteeverything comes together nicely with this look. I would have pushed it with a red purse.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely all about wearing color, especially if you are going to be in a situation where the predominant color of choice is black. I want people to know I am there, not to blend in with the crowd and your outfit is a total win.
ReplyDeleteI love the bold look! I went to a charity reception a few weeks ago and everyone had on suits. I wore a red pencil skirt, with a pink silk blouse and nude pumps. I definitely stood out but I owned it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE this look :) the colors are amazing.
ReplyDeletehave a good weekend :D

I say always go for the color. Why look like everyone else. Love the outfit!
ReplyDeleteI think it's far better to be bolder - and i love this color combo and your leopard heels!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute and awesome pose on the right! I loved yesterday's look too!
ReplyDeletei'm never afraid to stand out in a sea of black dresses! i love bold colors too; love your blog!
ReplyDeleteYES! I love the bolds and brights! I'm the youngest at my job and they love it. It always stands out from the blacks, navys and dark browns!
ReplyDeleteLove your color choice!
I love this combo on you! I really prefer bright, bold pops of color over a neutral palette. Love to stand out from the crowd!:)
ReplyDeleteBy the way, that necklace is gorge!!! I like it more each time that I see it. Come March when my finances are a little better, I must buy this from your S&D site!
Thanks Chrissie! This necklace was definitely a splurge for me, but I'm addicted. :-) Already have another outfit I'm wearing with it next week!
ReplyDeleteLove it Sharifa! Red/pink is one of my favorite combos!
ReplyDeleteLove that idea Tiffany!
ReplyDeleteDid you wear a jacket with this outfit?
ReplyDeleteNope, it's currently in the 70's here, so didn't need one.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the type of attire is appropriate, I prefer to stand out with color. Far too many women play it safe.
ReplyDeleteOk, lady, you are STUNNING. O.M.G. I am adoring this outfit on you, and would die to be able to rock it too! Will you come be my personal stylist on a shopping trip?? Thanks for stopping by my blog and your sweet comment, but I am pleased that I found YOUR blog as a result! I am a fashion disaster, you should know...
ReplyDeleteCannot wait to flip through your blog!! Have a fantastic weekend, love! xoxo!!
Your cobalt blue skirt really "picks up" the beautiful blue colors in your Indira Necklace, the shape of which looks like............ an upside-down............ (blue/gold/saddle tan)............ *R.*A.*I.*N.*B.*O.*W.*!! Gorgeous outfit, J.!!
ReplyDeleteah I love it! I have a similar royal blue sweater skirt that I absolutely love!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE colour (yes, I want to shout it from the mountain tops)! Btw, that Indira Necklace rocks.
ReplyDeleteJ you look amazing and so so slim! I totally agree, go bright and own it :) I work for a textiles company which specialises in all things floral and colourful and when we go to business meeting we are regularly looking like a paint palette exploded on us when everyone else is in black! It makes me happy though. Here's what I wore when I went to London last on business http://www.thankfifi.com/2011/12/trippin/
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. I really love the color combo. Both colors are beautiful and with the leopard added, it really brings everything together.
ReplyDeletelove this combo!!
ReplyDeleteI am in LOVE with this outfit! It could be one of my all time favs from your postings. I think that its a great idea to wear brights when you know everyone else will be wearing black, why not stand out in a good way - like you said though, ya' gotta own it! It looks like you totally owned this look and I am sure that you were of the most stylishly dressed there!
ReplyDeleteThis is UBER CUTE! Nothing like color blocking and finishing off the look with a pair of leopard heels! I've been loving cobalt lately (more like obsessing and putting together a whole review of a million things in cobalt) and your outfit just inspired me to put my mutard-y Loft shirt together with my cobalt Zara pants. Thanks so much for sharing! xo

Love those colors together - I'm currently looking for a perfect mustard skirt to wear it with my cobalt sweater)))
