This day on our trip was by far the most challenging - fashion wise and travel wise. We spent the day in Rome, with a flight that evening to London (more on that city later!). A huge temperature change, and in general kind of a pain to do sightseeing in the first half of the day, and then travel at night (I don't really recommend it). At this point, the only warm weather clothes I had left is this shirt and skirt, even though I wasn't loving the combo. I brought a scarf with me to make my skirt longer in churches (see silly picture below, I borrowed the top scarf from the church) and I was fairly comfortable during the day sightseeing in Rome. When we got to the airport I took a few minutes in the bathroom to freshen up and get out my boots and coat to prepare for cold weather. It was a very weird sensation to get to London, where it was very chilly, in the same outfit I had previously sweated in all day, then pile on a wool coat and boots... see previous comment on why traveling is better in the morning. :-) I made it work though, and even managed to feel somewhat stylish entering London and navigating the train at night to our hotel. A fashion challenge for sure, but I think I conquered it! Have you ever been in a similar travel/fashion situation?

oh I LOVED the "Underground" in London! I visited the city a few years ago, right before Christmas. It wasn't as cold as I had anticipated, but I only brought two coats, and since they were the accessory of the season, I wished I'd taken more coats and less jeans. I felt like I looked the same every other day, with the exception of a different scarf or shoes. Hope you had a fabulous time!
ReplyDeleteI think you look fab in both the hot and cooler climates! And thank you for the reply on the bag! I think I might get it!

On the Circle Line :)
ReplyDeleteHope you had fun!!
This outfit is a great one! Love the stripes with the pop of orange. The scarves are great ideas to use for modesty while in the churches.
ReplyDeleteI was in Italy for two weeks last fall (with my brother) and our travel schedule took us from Rome north to Venice. My suitcase was full of layers! The temps changed so much from city to city and it was really random - my outfits were so confused! I knew about the shoulders/knees rule in the churches so I packed knee length or longer and all my tops had sleeves. It was still a challenge though, with traveling every few days. And I agree with your train travel statement in an earlier post - I loved the trains! The US needs a rail system like Europe's!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally digging orange AND stripes lately!
ReplyDeleteWhy couldn't you just wear an appropriate outift so you wouldn't have to oddly pile on scarves in the churches?
ReplyDeleteBecause it's HOT. That is the common practice. Everyone pulls out their scarves as they enter churches. You suffer while you are looking at the church and then peel it off the minute you leave.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis might be my favorite outfit you've posted (of your vacation) yet! So fun.
ReplyDeleteI love the bright orange top with the navy/black stripes. It's playful and sophisticated (especially with the wool jacket). Haven't been to Europe yet and didn't even consider how the climate changes so much from one region to another. Based on the way I pack and dress, I'd be a complete wreck! Excellent job, J!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I love all your pictures! You look great!
ReplyDeleteTraveling between different climates is always awkward, but I think you nailed it!
ReplyDeleteJust out of curiosity, how many days were you away? My boyfriend and I want to do Italy in the spring, but seeing that you went to Paris too gives me an idea.... Then to see that you also hit up London, I am totally jealous! I love London and I would love to show him London so I'm just wondering how you squeezed it all in and would you recommend it?
Ciao!
Thank you Maura! It was 16 days total - 5 nights in Paris, 2 in Milan, 2 in Rome, 5 in London. I am going to do a "how to travel for cheap" post soon and share details on how I planned everything, but I will say that I was exhausted after 10 days and honestly just wanted to go home. :-) There is the attitude that you have traveled that far, might as well stay awhile and see what you can, but it definitely starts to take a toll with all the walking and whatnot. If I could go back, I would eliminate Milan and just focus on 3 cities! If you have any other questions let me know. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit - don't know why you don't :-P. The stripes and pop of orange are AWESOME! One thing I recommend when traveling between weathers is to take a pair of leggings and/or tights with you too - that way you can still be in your cute skirt, but your legs are covered up and you don't freeze.
ReplyDeleteI actually did a post on my own blog about it!

i actually quite like the combo! (and Rome.....)
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit especially with the blazer! It is so chic!!
ReplyDeleteim in the same situation when i paid a visit to a friend..its sunday so its church time but we already had a plan ahead, sight seing, church then dinner and maybe bars.... so what i dis was i wear my outfit which is a short short and a black top, i borrowed a knee length skirt from her thrown it into my bag and transform my outfit in the public restroom we passed near the church....
ReplyDeleteI think this is the first time I've seen you wear flats!
ReplyDeleteMary, I think this vacation was my first time ever wearing them! :-) I thought flat sandals would be too cold, so I hunted and hunted until I found a pair that I could actually stand. They were perfect for vacation, but it's back to heels for me now. :-)
