Today's Everyday Fashion: Pretty as a Tulip

Today's look is a mix of inspiration photos. I got the idea to pair my peach shirt with my pink/purple skirt from photo #3, and the idea to add a green belt from photo #1. Then I added a yellow cardigan and some nude pumps to complete the look. I think I look like a flower - it's almost as if that green belt is a stem! ;-) As I mentioned in Friday's post, cardigans and pencil skirts are my "work uniform", and I feel like I could never tire of coming up with fun color combinations for this particular type of look. What combination do you find yourself coming back to again and again? What is your work uniform?

  2. That's such a cute outfit.  I'm trying to pair more odd colors together as well.  Yesterday I wore a royal blue colored shirt with bright turquoise sandals and thought it looked pretty cool!

  3. Love it! Before I found all these fashion blogs, I was stuck in matchy-matchy land. If I wore a b&w skirt, a black or white top it HAD to be. If I wore a red skirt, only white or black would do. You get the idea. The outfits were cute, but still lacked that *wow* factor.

As for my work uniform, I'm like you -- skirt, cardi, tank/sleeveless top/sometimes a belt. Or, dress/cardi/belt. Though, I do more full skirts, a-line skirts than pencil skirts (I own ONE black one...*yawn*!), simply because I have more of those in my closet. I'm working on adding more pencil skirts though! I have my eye on a few printed ones at Target :)

  4. Wow love this outfit and color combination, I would never think to pair the two but it looks gorgeous! My work uniform is pencil skirts too and I only have black, so you've inspired me to get some color in my wardrobe and by some skirts with color such as yours!

  6. Love it Missy! Glad you are finding fashion blogs so inspirational and having fun with your work wardrobe! A-line skirts work better for some women's body types, but I don't look so great in them so I mostly stick to pencil!

  7. Love that color combo Faith! Sounds pretty cool to me.

  8. I would have to say, I love your outfit more than any of the inspiration looks (I think it's your top that sets you apart). Still, all of these outfits make this look a must-have. The colors compliment each other so nicely, and it's a really nice summer color-combo. Two thumbs up for sure!

  9. You always have such great color combinations! Inspiration photos are such a great tool in remixing items in your wardrobe and recreating looks to make them your own.

I always end up going with a pencil skirt and cute top for my work uniform. This summer I have been more brave with different color combos instead of blacks, grays, and browns too. It's made dressing for the office a lot more fun!

  14. I live in Louisiana so my summer uniform is anything breezy- skirts and fitted tees, comfy dresses, capris  and blouses.  I love your style.  Yesterday I took your advice in the work outfit post and wrote down different possible outfits (using my ipad to check your site for ideas) to save time in the mornings.  This morning I checked the list and put it together quickly!  I love the tip you gave about taking a picture to see what an outfit looks like.  Wow! It makes a big difference to see yourself how someone else would.  Thanks for all of the great advise.  You have inspired me to start blogging too!

  16. I like this outfit, especially for the office.  I'm not sure if I totally dig the belt with it...what if you tried a leopard print?  I bet that would tie in nicely with the cardi and your shoes.  What do you think?

  17. I love the idea of a leopard print belt! I wore one with this same skirt in this outfit: http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/04/todays-everyday-fashion-mixing-prints.html  The green here reminds me of the stem of a flower, and it adds a pop of color and is more summery so I'm totally digging it. :-)

  18. There is also a similar one at New York & Co. I searched high and low for one similar and finally found it there

  19. I love the belt with a pencil skirt but how do you keep it in place with a skirt without belt loops.  When I try wearing a belt on the skirt like you are doing I am constantly having to reposition the belt.  Help!

  20. Thanks Julie. Some movement is bound to happen but the belt should stay in place if you get enough leverage going. Watch my how-to video where I explain how I get "leverage" with my belts (and as a bonus, my method will keep you from having to ever punch new holes in your belt!) and let me know if you have any questions! http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2010/11/video-how-to-belt-cardigan_12.html

  22. Lately, I've been stuck in the "dress+belted cardigan realm" OR the wideleg pants+tucked blousy top+cardigan" realm. I've been all abouut flowy this summer!

  23. There is also a similar one at the Limited. They have the purple color and also a pink one! So cute!

  31. Did you recently buy that cardigan? I am DYING to find a long cardigan and I can not!!

  32. Claire, I have this cardigan in 3 colors and I bought them more than a year ago on clearance. I'll let you know if I spot some long cardigans elsewhere though!

  34. That color combo is lovely! I really like the way I've seen you use the purple skirt, mixed with neutrals. I'm going back to the US soon, a solid color bright pencil skirt is on my list!

  36. I notice you wear skinny belts a lot with pencil skirts. I love this look, but get frustrated with the belt throughout the day at work as I'm constantly adjusting it....  Constantly!

Do you secure it in place somehow when you're wearing a skirt that does not have belt loops?

  37. TR, so funny someone asked the same question below! Here is my response: Some movement is bound to happen but the belt should stay

  39. I love the outfit, but I would have went for a more muted belt. It still looks great, but I'm saying if I were wearing it. You never really make bad choices so please don't think I am saying that! :)

  40. i have that peach shirt from the limited! or at least one that's very similar. the ruffles have gone a bit flat, though so I haven't worn it in a while, but thanks for the inspiration for wearing it a new way! love it.
