Today's Everyday Fashion: Mixed Prints

Why this works: I'm a huge fan of mixing black and brown in outfit (as seen in this post!), but I've been stuck in a rut with only using a yellow-brown/cognac color. That's why I found the taupe brown color they used in the inspiration photo so refreshing! I definitely wanted to give it a try. The taupe color in my sweater ties in the taupe color in my shoes. I also chose a shirt with "light black" print, versus something with a dark black print, making it blend more easily with the brown. The prints are different, but one is very large (shirt), and one is very small (my shoes) so they work nicely together. I piled on some gold jewelry and a matching belt and I am good to go! Have you mixed taupe and black together? What are your tips for wearing two different animal prints at once?

  2. Hey J! Nice to have you back! I've been wishing you a speedy recovery. :) I love this outfit and will definitely be looking for pieces of my own to recreate it. I'm still not sold on the idea of mixing animal prints, but I love both the shirt and shoes individually! :)

Now I have a question for you and your readers. I'm a first year teacher and we start our school year in August so I know it'll still be in the 90's. Do you think the shorts in the inspiration photo are an appropriate length for teaching or should I stick with capris? Or maybe bermuda shorts? I try not to go shorter than arm's length with hem lines. Thanks!

  3. Hi J! Love your blog! When you post that you got something at TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, or someplace like that, can you post the brand of the item?

Lilly, I don't always know the brand, but I just went and looked though and this shirt is by h.i.p. I bought it almost a year ago - if an item is recent (within the past 3 months) I will either link to it or write (recent) next to it!

Erin, check out my post on office dress code do's and don'ts. I wouldn't recommend shorts this short in even the most casual work environment, but bermudas and capris are perfect! http://www.jseverydayfashion.com/2011/05/todays-everyday-fashion-office-dress.html

  7. Great interpretation of the look! I've never done two different prints before but I think keep them far apart in the same outfit does the trick.

Thanks Lindsey! H&M doesn't currently have online ordering in the US, but it's coming soon in 2012! My shoes are also from last summer so they are unfortunately not available anymore.

  12. I love pairing a rich camel colored brown with black.  I think most people don't realize that they go together just fine!

  14. I love that shade of brown paired with black.  I think it looks really crisp.   I have a similar cardigan that I pair with black, but I love how you added in the animal prints into the mix!  I need to add some prints like that to my shopping list!

  17. I don't mix black and brown often because I don't own a lot of brown, but I LOVE It when I see it on other people. This is a fabulous outfit! You look awesome, I love this.

  20. LOVELOVELOVE!!! This is so cute! I wish that when I went to Forever I actually find these shorts. Every time I go I never seem to find these. I find the shorter shorter kind. I am a mama of 4 I don't wanna look like a teen LOL. My goal this weekend is to find these shorts and the pink ones from a few weeks back. Thanks for inspiring me :-) p.s. hope your feeling better

  21. You are so sweet Nina! I totally hear ya on the shorts being way short at Forever 21. I bought these like 5 years ago, but they fit perfectly so I plan to hold onto them for a long time!

  22. Love the outfit!  I can't convince anyone I know that brown and black go together, lol.  Erin, I wouldn't recommend shorts that short for a teacher - but you should be safe with khakis.
